The plug is the same as ODB-II compliant systems, the protocol is MUT-II as opposed to ODB-II.

Depends what you're trying to do - ODB-II and MUT-II are similar protocols but they don't interoperate with each other. Assuming you have s/w thats MUT-II compliant and you can map the USB port as a serial interface, you should be able to interrogate the ECU.

What are you trying to do?

JUst want it for diagnostics really - found a OBD2 - USB lead.. Was thinking with the right software I'd be able to hook it up to the laptop..

More of a nice to have than a need to have..

You'll struggle to find software but if you do, let us know!

Just to expand a little - don't buy an OBD2 scanner as it won't work with the FTO. The history that I read somewhere is that Mitsi took the OBD2 protocol before it was finished and implemented their own version of it. Hence the socket is the same as an OBD2 socket!

As far as I'm aware, if you want to talk to the ECU, you have 3 options
- MUT-II or 3rd party equivalent (very expensive)
- someone did a Palm Pilot app that will connect to the ECU, and a cable to go from the Palm Pilot to the ECU. Saw it on ftooc. I have it, works well.
- Evoscan v0.99 is compatible - http://www.limitless.co.nz/EvoScan/. I've actually bought this one too, but my laptop died at the same time so I don't have a Windows laptop to try it with at the moment (work laptop is in danger of getting some new software installed when I think of it). Hopefully I'll get the carputer up and running in the next few months, and I'll be able to run this application on it and check on codes whenever I like.

I'd interested to see this in operation, if you ever do get it back up and running post some screenshots.

I took my FTO to a Mitsubishi dealer and they weren't able to connect their diagnostic software to my car.
There is a simple method you can use to find out any error codes that are on your ECU. The car will flash out the error code using the Engine Management light, sort of like morse code...

Link to the group buy that was on ftooc - click here. Actually if you search for 'evoscan' it gives you a few hits

The Palm Pilot one - click here

Hopefully I'll get to play with Evoscan myself tomorrow evening...
