cat-bybass

finally got around to fitting my cat by-pass today, ordered weeks ago from camskill after just about passing the nct with emmissions! the only problem is the spigot on the by-pass for the lambda sensor, the lambda sensor on mine went into a flexi pipe before the cat, so i just plugged the spigot on the by-pass with a bolt that fitted nicely! left the sensor where it was, will this be ok? nicer sound from the exhaust now, louder at high revs  , but still suttle enough on idle :D

That spigot is not for the lamda sensor but the exhaust temp sensor. this sensor is fitted to the OEM cat. You need to plug it and then eirter remove the sensor from the cat and leave it connected under the floor carpet or remove the exhaust temp light bulb on the instrumwent cluster.

Is the exhaust temp light not on. It should be when the cat was removed. Maybe someone has already removed the bulb. Does the light come on when you turn on the ignition.

nope, bulb is removed, and there wasn't any sensor in the oem cat! does this just mean it was by-passed by the previous owner?

i would guess it was fitted with a CAT-BYPASS when it was in the UK and was prob removed when being sold on.

any idea where one might get a temp sensor to fit? Do you have any floating about Steelroe?

With a bypass fitted the sensor has to be either bypassed or the bulb removed.
I have seen this on Jetski's also when the cat is removed you have to fit a certain value resistor to prevent the cat temp sensor activating.

Mad so even with a sensor fitting you think the light in the dash would be on because the exhaust temp would differ from standard setup? - both my cat bypass pipes have "fittings" for temp sensors..One has been plugged permanently with a well directed weld - the other came with a bolt but after the 1st drive the bolt was missing in action :-)

I just drive with the little red light on - after a while it stops being annoying..

remove the sensor from the cat and plug it into the connector inside the car under the carpet or just remove the bulb.

I will come on regardless with the cat removed as the cat absorbs a lot of the heat, it improves its efficiency.

Or measure the sensor resistance at room temp and then get a resistor as close as possible to that value at malpins and fit it to the end of the connector.

What I did in the Zed was just fitted the Cats (there was two) with drilled out spark plug non foulers which kept the sensor out far enough from the exhaust gas - doesn't throw a check light now - Zeds would always throw one on a decat otherwise.
