I'm considering getting a new phone, and possibly something with wifi capabilities. Problem is my broadband (if you could call it that) at the moment is via one of those 3G modem devices you stick into the laptop. I also have a wireless router from when we had a NTL connection before.
My question is is there anyway of getting the 3G modem to provide a wifi point for the phone?

Yes. But its not out over here just yet,
there going to be about 79 quid when there out. they have been released over in the uk and its only time before they come out here,

It could be done if you had a spare PC, DHCP would need to be disabled on your router however:

Yeah, I actually have a spare PC, so that wouldn't be a problem.
You'll have to excuse my computer illiteracy, but what is involved in disabling the DHCP on the router?

topcat - probably not an awful lot..

log into your routers configuration page.. in most cases it's a matter of finding a tick box called "enable DHCP" - make sure there's no tick.

Not really. I know at some stage before I did something to do with configuring my IP, but its not something I'm familiar with by any means. Sorry

TC, go to Start > Run and type cmd

At the command prompt, type ipconfig, take note of the default gateway address - this is the IP address of your router, probably something like 192.168.0.1

Type the IP into the address bar of a browser, at this point you need to log in. Username is usually admin, you'll need to know the auth details to log in.

Ok guys, and thanks for being so patient.
I've done as you said CJ, taken a print screen of my ipconfig details (just so I don't forget if I have to change them), and logged into the router.
I've had a look around at the controls within it for references to DHCP. In the "router status -> internet port" it says DHCP - DHCPClient. Further down under "LAN Port" it says DHCP - ON.
In "Advanced -> LAN IP Setup" there's a box tick with "Use Router as DHCP Server". And below this a Starting IP Address and Ending IP Address.
Is that the box I've to untick?

That would be the box alright, but setup your static IPs on at least 1 computer first, and make sure you can get into the router from that computer. It would be a .... to have DHCP turned off on your router, your new ips not to work and not being able to get back in!

On the other side, if you're considering renewing your contract with 3 your experience with them must be much better than mine was! Changed to Meteor the day my contract expired.

Ok, you lost me a bit at static IP's, how do I do that?

Oh NO. Don't get me started on Meteor. I have had the worst experience with them over the last couple of months. Their customer service, particularly in store, was nothing short of appalling. The general staff weren't too bad, but the manager of the store was the most rude and ignorant man I have ever dealt with. I'm in the process of moving as we speak, has your experiences with 3 been poor? I've only had the modem with them the last few months, but can't say I've had any issues.
