Brake imbalance -advice please

Postby Mustang » Wed Oct 14, 2009 11:08 pm

To add to my NCT woes the rear brake imbalance was out  I more or less knew it anyway. The two obvious culprits are.
1. The rear caliper. I see camskill do replacement seal kits -is that all that's required to recondition the unit? Not something I'd undertake myself -probably get a mechanic to do it. Is it a handy enough job for mechanic who knows what he's doing?
2. The balancing valve. I see there have been numerous posts about this also. Can this be removed/ cleaned/ reconditioned? I can't see any for sale, don't think a second hand one would be a good idea unless reconditioned. I assume this distributes the brake force to all wheels and not just the rears?

Looks like a piston would also be required

You have my sympathy Mustang, Mine failed on rear brake imbalance last time round. In the end I got second hand caliper from ricerocket, a secondhand Bias valve from Rory and several hours hard labour, stripped cleaned and coppergreased all calipers. job done. What a ballache.

My concern with a second hand valve is that there's every chance it'll be the same as the one being replaced. i.e. 12+ years old and worn.
What is the fault with these, do they wear or what? perished seal? Are they servicable? can they be reconditioned? I'm surprised camskill don't sell a solution -looks like a few people have failed the NCT on this issue. As is normal within the community the common faults/ failures seem to come in waves as the cars age.

Camskill have quoted
Brake line balance/distribution valve MB699553 £ 42.63 + vat
Not a bad price for a new valve.
