Rear bushings

Heya,

2 questions:

anyone know all the different bushings that you can have in the rear of the FTO? Garage said some bushes near the hub were badly worn.... not sure what ones they were talking about. Rang camskill and they reckoned it had to be drop link bushes?? I'm not sure and I don't want to go ringing the garage so they know I dunno what I'm talking about... anyway I wanna change them myself..... which brings me to my second question:

has anyone changed the rear arb bushes themselves, can this be done without jacking the car up, i.e. can it be done while the car just sits on the ground?

You've got ARB bushes and a few suspension bushes that no one seems to know anything about, apart from Rory; he replaced them all a few months ago. See this thread for some info. As regards changing the ARBs, I did it on the GS but I had it up on axle stands at the time, but you could just jack the car up a side at a time.

cheers ciaran, i got some axle stands but i was just wonderin if it's possible to change the arbs while the weight of the car is on the suspension.

I forgot to mention in the PM that a worn top mount will also caue loud knocking.

cheers rory - I think I'll do the arb's myself next week but I might get the garage to do the camber bushes cause I have them checking to see what the exact ones are and maybe I'll get them to check the top mounts too... are they pricey (top mounts)?

and the more I think about this the more likely it seems..... the knocking I'm hearing sounds like it is coming from right inside the boot, so much so that I was convinced it was the boot struts or the spoiler was loose but both these are fine. would make sense if it was the top mounts...... pain in the ar$e if it is cause i'm sure that's one labour intensive job

You would have the 2 mounts replaced in about 90 minutes. Only special tool needed is a set of coil spring compressors.

If the bushing on the inner side of the lower arm is gone like mine was, this is directly under the boot and the knocking sounded like it was coming from the boot.

Part numbers for the bushings are as follows refer to the suspension drawings in the download section for the PNC number locations.

I replaced all three but MR102063 was perfect, did the lot while I had the suspension stripped out. The other 2 were worn and the steel centre was very loose and causing a loaud bang over rough road.

Rory, is there any way of telling if these bushes are worn without taking the suspension apart ie. by getting under the car and tugging at the assembly?

This might work. (and you won't have to do the wheel alignment afterwards.


Remove the bolt holding the strut to the bottom arm.
Remove the bolt holding the hub onto the bottom arm.
Now shake the bottom arm and see if it is very loose, there may be s slight knocking depending on how bad the bushing is.

Also check the outer arm bushing for wear. The new bushings are very stiff to move.
