Smelly air conditioning

Postby ikeane » Fri Dec 30, 2005 3:41 am

Recently I'm getting a woeful smell when my air con is on :? A regular freshner just doesnt mask it so anyone else have this prob? Already ran a search on the forum and couldn't find anything on this particular prob.

That's mad... this has started to happen to me as well.. not sure what it is.. Aircon has been fine since I bought the car..however I've done a fair bit of long distabnce driving over the past copuple of weeks.. and well..it smells a bit like..poo...or a really nasty gas attack..

There are no nasty sounds from it...

My butt definately isn't leaking...

Aircon seems to be operating normally, other than the smell..

I'm guessing some "dirt" is stuck somewhere it shouldn't..

It happens, its usually a build up of bacteria in the system and is pretty common. There are definately some threads on it in here somewhere if you dig deep enough - heres one http://www.fto-ireland.com/forum/phpBB2 ... ight=smell

It's usually solved by spraying an anti bacterial spray into the system while running the air-con. You can do it yourself by spraying it into the fan, which is in the passenger footwell (you need to take off the fan cover - 3 screws - and spray it in there then run for a while it'll sort it. Or you can buy a can of air-con anti-bac spray in Consort (probably any good motor factors) for around €15 that you just turn on in the car with the air-con up high for about ten minutes (little bit messy afterwards, but It worked for me).

Sounds like a good plan...

have had almost all my interiour out - to get rid of the nasty smell of tobacco the car came with... Previous owner was a non-smoker but the guy in Japan definately smoked.. I weak Vinegar solution will kill tobacco smell..
And it only makes sense that there is a similar buildup of gunk in the aircon as well, never thought about it...

Will definately do this as soon as I have a chance!

Thanks mate!

You know, somebody actually complimented me on my driving today. They left a little note on the windscreen, it said 'Parking Fine'.

I got this stuff from Halfords (Liffey Valley) last time I was up, Comma air conditioning cleaner. It's a can, and you just
- set the airconditioning on full,
- push the passenger seat forward full (or drivers seat) and put it on the floor behind the seat.
- Then you just lock it open, it releases lots of (lemon fresh) stuff,
- wait until 5 minutes after the can is finished emptying, and you're done.

A day or two later the lemon smell fades but the air conditioning smell is gone too! Its supposed to get rid of all smells in the car, I didn't have any apart from the air conditioning, but it might do the trick for tobacco smells too I reckon.
