Automatic gearbox problems

Postby Baldrick » Tue Oct 21, 2008 2:16 pm

When I start driving from cold, everything is ok.
After about ten miles, when I stop, car stays in third.
Using the tip, I can drop it down for take off, but only to second.
Back into automatic, it shifts up to third, but won't hit fourth. Not even if I use the tip.
At this stage I'm left with only second and third.

It's a '94 GR 4 speed.

I've checked the gearbox oil when hot and it's well up there. Oil is nice and pinky.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Either the INVECS-II fuzzy logic is screwed up or you have defective gearbox speed senrors. Disconnect the battery for half an hour then reconnect, this will clear the driving sytkle map from the AT ECU. It may well take up to 300kms before the ECU learns your driving style again and readjusts accordingly.

If this doesn't work, search the for for 'diagnostic', if there are faulty input, output or speed sensors on the box, the diagnostic will flag it. All are relatively easy to replace.

Thanks for that CJ. Just back from a 15 mile spin. Same as I described above happened after 3 miles i.e. only second and third available.

Turned ignition off and on while driving and had full range of gears available. Changed up and down smoothly. Had to do it once more after 12 miles. Strange!

Would this behaviour tie in with what you said above? I'll try the battery first.

Thanks.

To be honest, sounds like a sensor problem, I had similar issues a few years back which were solved by replacing the gearbox output and input shaft speed sensors. More info:

Do you ever get a flashing 'N' on the instrument panel? If so, this is another indication of faulty sensors.

Cheers... I've stopped sweating so much. I'd checked out that Oz link earlier and hope to run a diagnostic tomorrow (disconnecting battery didn't help).

Excellent Link! You mightn't remember, but when I met you on the meet last Sunday I said that I had no gear lights on my clocks since I bought it (still trying to source bulb holders for these). The 'N' hadn't worked either. Got replacepent bulbs Sunday morning and swopped the PRND to the gears, so never saw the 'N' in action. I'll know more tomorrow after the diagnostic and post results.

Appreciate your help.

I actually have these sensors for sale cheap (brand new in boxes) if it is them. Something similar happened to me but I wasn't so lucky. Check out the For Sale section, only posted last week. There's links on there too to other threads where people have had similiar problems.

Popped a bulb into the 'N' slot and drove car. Started acting up after 5 minutes and 'N' started flashing.

Ran a diagnostic and got a code 22 from the 'N' light, so looks like the Input shaft speed sensor. Image

As you can see from the above, looks like I'm in the market for an Input speed sensor. How much do you want for it?
