Try running a diagnostic, link how to do it is here -click

It idles ok, just when you press the accelerator it cuts out? Might be worth giving the stepper motor a clean though. See info on the stepper motor here - click

my FTO is doing something the same, except 2 stop it cutting out i have to rev it.
am fitting a new exhaust tomorrow,while the old one has been busted for quite a while i am wondering if this has anything to do with it.

could it be the stepper motor?

Does it race - revs go up and down when you let it idle.

reading through other posts it sounds like you are right pergau.
i have found out how to clean the stepper motor but here is the good bit,
i dont know where to find it in the car,i know its terrible.
however i did check for error codes and it came up clean.
the exhaust is the business,only that the flange that goes into the cat was too big and they had to cut off the old one and weld it to the pipe.

anyone able to post a picture of the engine with the stepper motor highlighted

The stepper motor is bolted to the engine under the Air intake.

The photo http://www.savetheliffeyvalley.com/FTO/FTOStepperMotor.xhtmlhere shows the location

I took the photo from the FTODIY site which also has the instructions for checking the Stepper http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jaycom/fto/engine/stepper.htm

Yeah the source for that xhtml page isn't right..

<DOCTYPE>
<html>

<head>
<meta>

<title>FTO Stepper Motor</title>

</head>

<body>
FTO Stepper Motor location<br>
<br>
<img>
</body>

</html>

basically the html tries loading the picture from whatever folder you're currently in... wont work unless you're on the machine the page is created on.

thanks for trying to help maud but i dont know what ur last post was about
mechanic came down and had a look and said that the spark plugs were shot through. thats why it cuts out most off the time as it is struggling to ignite the fuel. does not sound right either when it is ticking over.
hope to god this is the problem as i have not got to spin around since i got me new exhaust

Maybe you need new sparks but my guess is still that it's the stepper AND your regular mechanic will not diagnose this easily - unless of course he is FTO savy.

I have just sorted mine and it's a doddle. Easy to diagnose too.
How ? unpluig the stepper motor. The plug is just under the air intake on the right hand side of engine block. When you start the car cold, you will have to rev it for about 1min, then it will run fine, although it can heave slightly when you take the foot off the gas the odd time. I drove mine like this for a week until I bought my new stepper.
