VRT April

Postby RussMan » Thu Mar 20, 2008 3:32 pm

Hi All,

Have a couple of questions people might have some answers for???? :)

I'm planning on importing a few cars in the not so distant future including another 350z, MR2 and an fto.

I'm slightly concerned though about the April VRT changes and how they will effect my plans.

* If i was to import a used car after April would that car be subject to new motor tax regulations as well as new VRT rates?

* What increases am i likely to see on the tax front for a 350z. I'm currently paying circa 1300 for Road Tax which should remain this way for the life of the car as opposed to increasing in April??? correct?

* Do you anticipate huge increases on VRT for Used Japanese imports... i.e fto's. I can get several 2000 reg Version R's for about 4.5K excluding VRT at the moment which seems as though a reasonable return could be made on importing them judging by the current Irish market prices.

Any information is welcome,

Thanks
Russ

Russ, the deadline is July, not April.

You may want to post on one of the existing threads on this topic:

As I understand it, if you've no emmisions report for a new or used car imported after July 1st, you default to the highest tax band i.e. 2k p.a. Get your skates on....

I would wait and see if they change the criteria - there was talk of changing it so that the new Tax laws for imported cars only apply those cars registered after 1st Jan - check out the other posts CJ lists for more info.

Mustang posted a link to a discussion on octane relating to this - it looks like the new car tax regulations will only apply to new cars registered in Ireland after July 1st 2008 OR imported cars registered after July 1st 2008 which were originally registered on or after Jan 1st 2008 in their country of origin.

This means imports registered in the UK before Jan 1st 2008 will stay on the old tax system.

I don' think this applies to the VRT though - so you will pay the new VRT rates.
