Where to buy?

Postby Nailer » Tue Jan 17, 2006 2:21 am

Hi guys i look forward to enjoing the fto driving experience soon enough, just looking for a bit of advice before i take the plunge.

Wheres the best place to buy?

http://www.carzone.ie/usedcars/index.cf ... rID=328584

Going to view this tomorrow at some stage just wondering what your thoughts were? Price wise i would have thought it was ok but ive only been looking at the prices for a week or two. Deffo looking for a GPvR in manual or a nice GPX in tip might be worth a look

Seen the same car with different milage advertised which worries me, is there any way of verifying this? Im going to ask him for the auction report and anything other then being allowed to look at it will ring alarm bells in my head!

Thanks for the help in advance,

P

Welcome Nailer, if you havn't already read the buying guide, check it out: http://www.fto-ireland.com/buyingguide.html

Byrne Autos would be one of those dealers that would operate in a cartel situation, its not unusual to see their cars being advertised by someone else.
The fact that they advertise the car as a 'MIVECK' shows that they don't pay a lot of attention to what they're selling. That said, it might just be a decent machine, go drive it and check it out thoroughly, don't go on impulse, check out a couple of cars before you make a decision. When buying from a dealer, you would expect the cambelt to be changed as well as a full service, he should give you at least a 3 month guarentee.

Edit: He has Climate Control listed, the GPvR has manual aircon, not climate control. Also, heated seats are mentioned, they were never an option, ask him how he came to the conclusion that the car has heated seats!

Just been to look at the resprayed blue one down the bottom of the list in carzone. 1995 tip gpx with 111kms on the clock. Overall condition is ok, needs a bit of tlc and stuff like the rev clock not working but im told this will be fixed before sale.

Things that bother me,

1. It wont go into park, the car has a remote start clifford and he blames it on this but i dont buy it... it does have an aftermarked gear lever is that anything to do with it?

2. No nct and its not something he will guarantee because of the tinted windows (it will pass with them im ceritan)

Going to get my mechanic to give it the once over after that anything specific i should look out for?

Many thanks

I'd be very careful with this one, if it won't slot into park, it could indicate a gearbox problem. Next time you take a look at it, unscrew the gear lever, it should come away handy enough, try shifting into Park, if it still won't go, I'd be a bit concerned.

If I were buying a car, I'd want it to have an NCT, how long out of date is the current NCT? This could indicate that the cars been lying around for a while.

Just a point on the tip parking mines gave that trouble when i first got it, heavy clunk when going into park didn't like that so i never use park always neutral and hand brake 3 years on no other probs with box (touch wood)

But as the guys have said plenty of good cars for sale, I would deffo be looking for one with a current nct, it gives you at least a bit of confidence in the car your buying,

Good luck in your hunt you will not be dissapointed in the FTO its a grrrrrrrrrrrreat car :D :D :D

If its going up on a ramp pay particular attention to the droplinks and the bushes - if they haven't been changed they are likely to be in poor condition - no biggy - they're easy and relatively cheap to change but you could use this as a bargaining tool to get the price down further. Also check to see when the last oil change on the Tip box was done and when the cambelt was last changed. The Tip box I'd be more worried about - make sure you get some kind of gaurantee - if the dealers not prepared to give you at least 6 months - then walk away. At any rate you will likely have to spend a few bucks to bring the car up to scratch.

BTW - Are you the same Nailer as on Munsterfans.com?

As the lads have said I'd be very careful here - if the tip box goes (as did for me) you're looking at a minimum of €1000 to fit a 2nd hand box or €1500 for a reconditioned box.

I had John Davey give it the once over today and he was happy with it bar the front bumper needing to be resprayed but i knew that so that kind of made my mind up for me the fact that he said it drove very well, needs to be tracked though and thats not a big problem.

Manged to sort the problem with the tip box it was the stupid aftermarket gear shifter on wrong so it goes into park now no problems.

Found a mivec controller in the center console i hadnt noticed before aswell.
:P

Gave me a better price then i expected on the bravo so i put a deposit on it and Twill be ready next week!!

Cant wait 8)

I don't think we have many of them in the FTO Ireland club - Maybe we could just give your bird a boost up?

Scratch that, we can pile up 4 or 5 space-savers, that should give us the height, all we need now is a DC-AC power convertor and a wash basket....
