A couple of questions

Postby EFFTEEOHHHCraig » Tue Oct 05, 2010 4:29 am

Hi guys,
Just a couple of questions about my FTO as i couldnt find exactly what i was looking for in the previous posts (i know...theyre probably there).
Anyhoo, when i start the engine from hot or cold it revs high and settles back to around 1100rpm and although i read this is quite common, how can i get this resolved DIY?.I notice the stepper motor is mentioned a lot but wouldnt the car idle erratically whilst normal driving is underway?.I removed it and cleaned the plunger and inside the TB but not sure if this is the norm for cleaning this unit. The previous owner has fitted an HK air filter (the dome type) and i am tempted to change that too as it doesnt seem right somehow. When i rev the car it does not return very quickly back to normal idle but stays up at 2500 and returns slowly...i also reset the ECU but things are just the same.Any help appreciated,Craig.

change the stepper and all idle problems will go away
put back the filter box with standard or high flow filter from camskill (open filter in engine bay is just 4 show)

It might be worth having a look at the idle screw.

Also if you don't like the filter then by all means change it but if it's set up correctly (addition of CAI) then there would be no drop in performance.

well idle screw has nothing to do with returning badly to idle... and this is the most important sign that the stepper coil or its nose are one foot in the grave:)
one more thing to check/set/tune is the TPS which has detailed instructions on how to fine tune in workshop manual nr1 in download section.

I've seen back to back testing on aftermarket filters and theres not a lot in it but to say it drops performance is incorrect. I ran my GPX on a rolling road with the ITG and then with the standard induction and there was around a 2-3bhp increase using the ITG - and thats with the bonnet closed on a rolling road - the ITG would suffer less on the open road as there would be less of a buildup of heat in the engine bay. In this regard a good quality CAI combined with something like a HKS or ITG is IMO the way to go. And it sounds awesome in comparision to the standard induction(in particular the HKS).
