it all depends on how bad it is, suspension would be a big concern not to mention if the chassis was bent or anything! you'd obviously have all the panels to replace, front bumper and bonnet, then windscreen and new ignition barrell! all that and you'd still be driving a crashed car. don't know if i'd bother!

It would have to be done properly, or it'll be impossible to shift whenever you went to sell her.

As Dave said, it very much depends on what damage is done underneath the body work, is the chassis damaged/bent?

€2500, assuming everything is ok underneath you're looking at a wing, bumper, bonnet, windscreen, headlight, indicator/sidelamp, which are going to cost a fair few quid (headlights start at Stg£100 on ebay usually), then it'll probably need to be painted so everything matches, looking at €1000+ for the paint job alone I'd guess... presumably there's going to be some labour involved too...

To be honest I reckon you'd pay close to the cost of a non-damaged car, and you'll end up with something which, unless it's done really well, is going to be down in value and harder to shift. It's 97 ok but not a facelift so wouldn't have the extra premium in value that facelifts tend to have.

Then of course if there is more damage underneath add replacing all that onto the bill, which depending on what is damaged could be pretty expensive.

I can see where the temptation is, but financially I don't reckon its the way to go.

Its going for €2500 or so...

Have a chat with Steelroe about the cost of 2nd hand parts first - its probably possible to get it right for about 2 - 2.5K if there is no chassis damage. Realistically though there are just too many good FTO's for sale at the 5-7K mark to make this a viable project. If it was a manual GPX then maybe but it looks like a bog standard GR (NOI GR owners).

it is a 97 though. and you would epxect to pay in and around 8K (Maybe more) for a good clean manual GR.

Yeah - didn't see the Manual comment.
It would probably be important to put a facelift front on it while you're repairing as this would definetly add value. Steelroe put a facelift front on his own FTO and probably has most of the 2nd hand parts to repair this car so I guess he is probably best placed to comment on whether this is worthwhile or not.

Neil,
Is this the same one from the B&S?

Mitsubishi FTO 2.0L '97.Manual, silver. front driver side damage, highest offer secures. Contact: 086812467901-8470694.

Was it stolen?

Agreed lets face it, the bumper eally is the only distinguishing feature between 'new' and 'old' FTO's.

Looks like a big project and not one I would take on lightly. Like MfFTO said there are quite a few good cars out there for 5 - 7K.
If you're looking for a bargain you would be better off the wait for that genuine 'quick sale' add!

Steelroe said he will have a '97 manual GR for sale, I'd definitely check the price of that one first.

Yea thats the one. No it wasnt stolen, the guy totalled it himself, he said someone pulled out in front of him on a motorway (he seemed very upset about it actually (as you'd expect!) as he said he had been looking for the right car for months before he bought it...)

I agree... in fact I'd pretty much already decided once I saw the photos that it was far too much for me to take on but thought I'd post it anyway, see what others thought.

I'd agree on the above estiamtes of 2-2.5k on the basis that the engine + major componants are fine, in terms of suspension, you may also need a set of wishbones but its difficult to tell from the pics. This is exactly the sort of thing that would interest Rory so you might have a bit of competition! If I had somewhere to store it, I'd be very interested in doing a job on it myself.

Ah, so it is the same one. He did say he had someone coming from Galway to look at this weekend (he mustve mixed up Kerry and Galway?).

I'm going to email him now and tell him I'll be leaving it, it seems a little much for me to take on, and i wouldnt want to step on any toes!

Are you planning on rebuilding it yea? Rather than breaking it? As I would likely be interested in buying the finished product off you (long as its healthy) so keep us informed on that score...

cheers
