Which Oil

Postby Speedyboy » Sat Nov 15, 2003 12:20 pm

The Oil changes in my GR are only giving me 3/4000 km's before the tappeting starts again. Its only on the first start of the day but annoying all the same.

I Remeber reading that 15/40 oil or 15/50 would improve it but when i went to buy 15/40 it said it was only for use in pre 90 cars and 15/50 said it was only for use in racing car engines.

Has anyone tried these oils or what are you using?

There are plenty of myths about quitening tappet noise in GRs but the fact is thet you can never completely get away from it without replacing them. 15\50 seems to be grade that calms things down but don't expect miracles.

Mineral oil isn't a good enough lubricant for the V6 engine, use fully synthetic or a good semi synth, GTX Magnatec 10/40 is one of the better oils you can throw into the GR\GPX, I use it myself and can recommend it.

Ciaran's right - you need a fully synthethic - something like the Castrol or Mobil 1. Getting the 15/50 won't make that much difference cause but you could also try Forte Top End Treatment - it's suppose to be good. Camskill and Funky product both sell it.

Like Ciaran said though - only way to really cure noisey tappets on a GR is to get them replaced. Very expensive though - looking at approx €1K.

That said, there is a guy in the UK (you can catch the thread on smartgroups) who reckons he can get tappets direct from Japan for 270 (sterling). That sounds like a good price and I'm thinking of getting some through him cause mine need doing.
