Starter just went today-how to refurbish an FTO starter :)

My FTO starter had give up today just when i needed it badly
Since its an auto box i couldn't push start it so i got it towed back home! It was 15km away from my place
If theres already topic that describe the starter fix up please delete this one, if no then i'll update it with complete how to with pictures!

So i already took all apart and getting the replacement parts tomorrow.

The new part arrived yesterday!

Brush holder fitted to the cap to see is it 100% match:

Now just the cap back on the brush holder:



And the starter primed a few times straight of the battery to make sure the brushes get the armature shape on them to avoid further premature wearing of!
All fitted back and the car crank like a mad one now!

Wow - this actually seems to be an easy job then. €20 for a part and I know that the starter motor is easy enough to take off.

How long does it actually take to open up the starter and fit the new part ? I'm guessing about 30 minutes ?

What kills me about things like this is that the garage would probably say that you need to rebuild / rewind the starter motor. They would then send it off to a guy and he would do what you have done and charge you about €140.

A long, long time ago, the kings steam ship broken down and the ships mechanic was unable to get the steam engine running again.

The king called upon all the mechanics and repair men in the land, offering a handsome reward for the man who could fix it. They brought fancy gadgets from afar to do the job. Took me more than 30 minutes tbh! About 1-1.5h only for the internals :)
I could do that supper quick but i like to clean and check all the bits and pieces, what else need replacement, see how the bearings are and put some more grease when assembling together! Then prime it of the battery when all done! Say 3h from the start (removing the starter from the engine) to finish (starter fitted)

Damn straight. I see what you did there ;)

The price of perfection means I'm without my FTO since Thursday. I dropped it into the body shop to get that Nasty door scratch taken care of. The wing is also getting resprayed from a scratch a good couple of months ago. The gas bonnet lifters have got quite a bit of surface rust, so they're getting sanded and sprayed too. It's getting a valet aswell :)

Did you refurb the starter motor solenoid or leave it as is?

And what other parts might need replacing inside the starter motor, in terms of bearings etc?

U have to check all really good and decide what to replace then, sometimes if the brushes burn the armature it need replacement also.

The solenoid doesnt break that often and it was good in mine, but if it does just take it apart and inspect all, U might need to source another one, there should be number of starters that has same solenoid i think.
