Starter motor dead

Postby Keith » Wed Dec 29, 2004 2:35 pm

Looks like my starter motor is dead, car wont turn over and the battery is fine. The problem where can I get a new one at such short notice? Any ideas?

You've a couple of options Keith:

1. Check out a scrap yard (see Services page for links), the same 1kW starter motor also appears on the '95 Mirage.

2. Camskill - be prepared to fork out a few quid, send your old one back and then get a refund.

3. Get the car down to a decent auto-electrician, there are clutches, brushes and armatures that may be servicable.

4. Get under the engine (LHS) and give the starter a smack of a hammer (yes, really!). This might free up whatever is making it stick. Try it first, you might be surprised. See pic below (ref 16-010) if you're unsure of its location.

Cheers,

Tried the Hammer thing, once or twice it struggled but went dead again.

My main problem was find a auto elec that was open this week but Hamilton's on the south circular road was open, just for emergency work
he said, so i had the car dropped in to him about 2pm. Should be ready a 4:30 he said. He was working on a Ferrari when my bro dropped the car up so it looks like he's well capable. The charge is only a ?100 too.
