i think i smell trouble

Postby mick_dont_surf » Wed Jul 19, 2006 11:39 am

i was doing a lot of milage yesterday
from Monaghan to galway and back, via carrickonshannon
not the most sensible thing on the hottest day of the decade
but anyway.
i was driving great, when the car just cut out
no warning nothing. just no reaction from the accelator :(
i tried flipping it into tip bet it wouldnt pick up a gear
the car kept going but just slowly dropped in revs and slowed down

i first happened when i was seriously low on petrol and just got one in longford. so i just assumed it was because i was low on petrol
after filling up, i continued on then to galway no probs.
on the way back it started to happen again just before rosscommon
it seems to be okay when you let the car sit for a while
so im not sure if its over heating. there was no indication of engine
overheating no warnings or anything
this happened once more before carrick were i let the car sit for an hour
after that no problems at all

ive had a few suggestions from several people hurling from the ditch

1. bad petrol (hmmmmmmmm)
2. dust in the filters(possible as it was like driving through sand storm down the midlands
3. clutch is gone.
4. something called a torque converter is gone
5 and mypersonal favourite, "the cars feck, you should of stuck with the bora, that wouldnt of broken down. etc. etc"thanks dad

any other suggestions
please help

Hey Mickey..

Check your fuel filter..

It possible that you've had a bit of sediment floating about in your tank - and running it very low would have sent it though the pipes and up into your filter..

Not entirely sure where the fuel filter is located on the FTO but once you find it it should be simple enough to check..

Its the black yoke on the the bukhead hehind the engine, worth replacing every 30-40k or so, very possible that a vbocked filter is causing fuel starvation. Could alos be a dodgey fuel pump ot connection to the pump for that matter.

If it was bad petrol you probably wouldn't be able to start the car afterwards.

Theres no clutch in an auto, if the torque convertor in the g'box was gone you'd know all about it - the engine will just rev out (when in gear) and the car won't move.

Get it to a pro if it still happens after you've checked the usual suspects...
