the petrol gauge in my car stops to move when it reaches 1/4 full.when i fill up it rises to the top and moves accordingly to the remaining petrol untill that point.i have no way in knowing how much is left in the tank.what causes this

Had the same problem in my last car, so will be interested to hear any thoughts. Thankfully I was able to by the warning light which was still working.
I think in my case, the problem start after I let the tank run very low once. Would it be a air-block or something in whatever reads the level?

it could be but how do i get rid of it if it is airlocked

The dial could just be stuck.
It's not that hard a job to take it off and have a look.

Depending on how the install was done - yes.

Possibly dials alrigth or the level arm on the fuel pump is sticking.

still the same problem.stripped the dials and put them back in.still no improvement.anyone have any other suggestions???

Get a second hand instument binnacle and swap out the fuel gauge spindle, if the problem still occurs, it would be a problem with the float in the tank.

Theres a spindle for each gauge behind the dials.
