Need advice on security

Postby Aidan » Thu Feb 23, 2006 2:06 am

My FTO will be in arriving into Dublin Port tomorrow. I have all the customs charges etc paid so I should be able to collect the car early next week. Considering I live in Clondalkin and have heard quite a lot of horror stories regarding peoples cars been stolen, I want to secure my car like Fort Knox.

I have been doing some research online and looked through ftooc.org and have an idea of the types of devices I want.

First thing is a Disklok. Anybody know where the cheapest place to buy one would be? Argos have them for €130.

I want to get a top quality alarm fitted. I was thinking of a Clifford Intelliguard 950. Is there any dealers/fitters that would have these or would I be better buying it in the UK and having someone fit it? I'd say it would be hard to find someone as most alarm fitting companies won't fit alarms if not bought from them.
I was also looking at an AutoCate 800 addon for the alarm. Its a sms based "paging" system. http://www.abacuscaralarms.co.uk/alarms/autowatch/autocate.htm
I am interested in the security window film but don't know if its worth the cost. Anyone have any opinions?
And finally, maybe something for the future would be a shaven door kit. Has anybody had this done?

I know this might seem a bit overkill but I rather spend the money and sleep somewhat sound at night than have my future p&j nicked or damaged by some theiving scumbag.
Your thoughts and opinions would be much appriciated.

Cheers,
Aidan

How does it ruin the look of the car? Is it because of the tints?

NOI but I personnally don't like it on an FTO - tinted windows are a far better option.

One of the girls on here had it done to her car - me no likely! ( the windows that is  )

Congrats on your new motor! :)

One thing though - for customs etc. (at least when I imported mine) they wanted to examine the car before telling me how much the customs charge was going to be. How do you have the customs charges already paid? :smt017

Also, have you organised it to be locked up while its sitting on the docks? They unload the cars onto the docks and then just leave them there so if you haven't already arrange for someone to lock the car up nice and safe for you.

On mine I put an alarm and also a seperate immobiliser. I've told members of my family how to start the car and handed them the keys, but they've still tried and failed on a few occasions!

Adrian on here has a car security business, he might be able to help you out. He was looking into tracking systems at one stage...

Ah I think we have our wires crossed. I was talking about the security film that stops someone from breaking the glass not the one you can't see through.

Thanks Kev.
A friend of mine is looking after all the paper work etc for bringing the car in. I think he uses some kind of customs broker and they were able to tell him the exact figures that needed to be paid. I sent them 4 bank drafts to cover customs, vat, shipping etc and they told him that the papers have gone through and as soon as the car is inspected by customs to make sure that it is what its supposed to be and is not stuffed with drugs, I could take it away. The only problem is I might not recieve the papers I need to register the car straight away and will have to wait until they post them to me. I don't like the thought of it sitting in my driveway unregistered and uninsured.

Thanks adrian, I don't think I'll bother with a tracking system just yet. I'm more interested in the sms paging system. It would be very useful if every time your alarm went off you would get a text telling you so, especially if you parked somewhere like a shopping centre and you were off inside shopping.
Do you sell alarms also? If not do you fit them?
