NCT YEsterday - Problem

Postby RussMan » Thu Aug 10, 2006 12:47 pm

Hi There,

Well fto flew through the nct until they took a look under the car and saw that there is a tiny bit of rubbing on a full lock... so failed the car!!
Crap... So i'm not sure what to do... the car passed around nine months ago ... in a lowered state... only difference was i had a 30 mm profile tyre then and now have a 35 mm profile...
Dunno what i'm going to do... just spent 600+ on new tyres so can't afford to go buy another set... The rubbing is so marginal but i guess it warrants a fail result

Any suggestions?

On a good note i managed to get my insurance down to 1200 yo yos..

Cheers
Russ

Whats that all about? Mine rubs on full lock and there has never been a problem with the NCT. You could remove the wheel and fix up the wheel arch liner using screws, cable ties of the like.

Good option :) In fact the front section of the liners on my GPX have long since shredded as a result of the larger tyre profile...

Yeh all about removing the liners..... Do you have a great gasping hole when you look in after it though??? Can you pass the NCT without them?

Thanks
Russ

Theres a bit of a hole alright but its not too noticable if the car is lowered on 17s. Can't see why you would fail the NCT with them out.

You would be better off sticking the front of the car up on axel stands to be on the safe side, I never trust the jack for anything other than changing a wheel. They're not too difficult to remove, theres about 4 or 5 screws:

Personally, I wouldn't remove them though. Get in the car and turn the wheel left and right, try and work out where the wheels are rubbing. You might be able to secure them sideways or upwards as needed, either by drilling into the chassis and screwing them up or by using cable ties. Another alternative it get get a hold of a heat gun, heat the sections were contact is occuring and push them out with a piece of wood or a claw hammer or something. This is what I did originally and it worked a treat.

Mine rub slightly on full lock - had no problem passing NCT recently. The last time my car was in bodyshop I got them to rivet the wheel arch liners as high as they could - helps a bit though I still have slight rubbing - have also found that different makes of tyres can have problems depending on their shoulder design. A lower offset wheel would help as well.

Get the heat gun out and a few tie binds or just cut out the areas of the liner where its rubbing.
