Personally, I would have agreed with the IE issues when they released IE6. However IE8 is far afar superior and is now up there with browsing speed. All the most recent testing points towards Mozilla being the slowest at the moment (usually due top the number of plugins installed). Personally I use Chrome for it's sleek simple quick design. As far as compatibility goes, you may as well not even mention it. Microsoft own XML and set the standards, however, they don't even adhere to these themselves. More often, web designers make sites to accommodate all browsers, but the ones that are WC3 compliant and XML compliant won't necessarily work on all browsers.
I'd recommend Chrome to anyone, but I can't see much of a difference anymore with the new IE8. I have no problems using either, and Mozilla annoys me with it's bulky design (granted I haven't used it in a year or so).
