Rust on Fto

Postby richardc9052 » Fri Dec 03, 2010 1:59 pm

Ok so i checked the fto i am buying for rust and the only place i can find it is under the rear drivers arch, but not on the arch it is on a metal bar to the left of the wheel at the top of the arch.. so what is this bar? and should i be looking anywhere else for the rust? (cant get under the car, no lift) it was only nctd in feb this year so i cant imagine it being that bad>?

hmm, thats worrying, are you sure we ar talking about the same thing? it just looked like a 1.5"-2.5 in metal bar, didnt look like what i would call a chassis arm? if this is the case then im gonna have to pull out from buying it so if you have any pics of what the chassis arm looks like please post one so i can be sure.. thanks

Just check how bad it is - if it's rusted through the member then you have an issue - if it's surface rust then just wire brush it off and you're sorted.

Common FTO complaint, but rare that the rust is that bad that it's actually an issue.

Also - if the FTO is great otherwise it might be worth pursuing, as it's not a major job to get fixed.

Thanks for the input, was at the meet last night for a few hours and discovered that the rust is on the fuel tank filler pipe and is only surface rust :D

Rust in the roof is common. Look for a line of bubbles 10 cm behind the front window and 10 cm in front of the rear window on the roof. If it has a sunroof, there may also be some just in front of and just behind it. Was a problem in pre 98 FTO's and was due to the glue used to separate the subframe from the roof skin.
