Importing a 4x4 or something that's classed as a commercial

Postby adrian » Thu Aug 12, 2004 12:00 pm

Hi,

Just looking for the girlfriend at the moment as she's keen to get a SUV or something like that. I'd love a Honda HR-V but they are not classed as a commercial and so they have the full 25% VRT on em. I believe that is you are taking in a commercial (LandCruiser, L200, Navara etc) that the VRT is only about 13%. We're getting married in November so'll prob wait till after that....but....it's been a while since I was doing up the importing sums. What do I need to add on....

21% VAT
10% Customs
13% VRT (if commercial)

There are some nice jeeps 1999 or 2000 for around 7K on Idirect.co.jp...so that would be on the road here for around 12,500!!

Adrian,

Agree with you re HRV - My mother just bought a new 3 door - nice looking sporty jeep - good handling - good spec - but you don't need to import one to get a good one - the Irish spec models all seem pretty high spec - are mostly all 4x4 - whereas many of the imports seem to be 2WD.

Haven't seen any commercial jeeps come in from Japan - they all arrive with seats and windows - but you can make the conversion as soon as they come in and then declare them as a commercial vehicle.

Mentioned an EVO PAJ to you before - my mate is considering bringing one in - taking out the rear seats and declaring it as a commercial - his uncle imports a lot of Jap Jeeps and does this on a regular basis with standard Paj's/Troopers etc

Adrian,

I work as a transport co-ordinator in Dundalk and we take various types of vehicles in from other countries. I know that if your importing and can get the vehicle classed as a commercial, it will only cost you €50.00 for the VRT.

Its convincing the person in the VRO that your gonna use it commercially, otherwise its 13%

Hey Adrian,

importing my FTO so fairly well up on these:

customs = 10% of the cost of the vehicle PLUS the cost of shipping it to Dublin
VAT = 21% of the above total, i.e. (cost of vehicle PLUS cost of shipping PLUS 10% of that) => bastards charge you 21% on their own tax!

VRT, I've only rang the VRO and asked how much the FTO would be, so I'd go with Diddler, sounds like he'd know what he's talking about!

Re whether to import at all, don't forget to add on the cost of taxing the jeep for the year, as if you buy one here it'll prob come with at least a few months tax... To be honest after importing myself (arriving Sat), with the wait and the hassle and all the tax I'm not at all convinced on whether it really is a good idea rather than just buying it here...

Not sorry I've bought the FTO (god no!), but when I heard someone else getting a GR Manual for 4.5K I'm thinking maybe I should have been a bit more patient in finding the model/gearbox/colour/etc. I wanted here... :? Ah well, it'll be worth it when I get it! :)

Anyway, just my tuppence worth, or is that two cents!

hope that helps,
Kev.
