Classic Vs Vintage

Postby Dragonheart » Wed Aug 11, 2010 11:59 pm

Wondering what the difference is? I seem to recall reading somewhere that classic is 21 years old, while vintage is over 30, but when I look into classic car insurance it tells me 30.
Was looking into it cause am thinking of a second car and the one thing thats a hindrance is tax as its 3L, but if I got a 1990 then it wouldnt be long before classic would kick in and I could get cheap tax, insurance, and no NCT, in theory anyway. Anyone have any idea on how the system works?

In reality there is no difference, to my mind classic would be 25+ years old, and vinatge would be maybe 50+ years old (Ford Model T that type of thing).
However the terms get used and abused interchangeably.
In the real world (in Ireland) a car must be 30 years old to avail of the nominal VRT and motor tax rates.
However most classic car insurers will offer cover for cars 20 years old or more (obviously you'd still be paying the full motor tax rates).

In short if you want to save on insuarnce, buy a 20+ year old.
If you want to save on tax and insurance buy a 30+ year old.

Nice one lads, cheers.
Wildhound: Nope, not a GTO. Considered but theres a more powerful 3.0L TT out there which I prefer.

Suppose if your worried about the tax, you could "commercialise" the car you are after for commercial tax like many big litred cars out there like the GTO.

Well then we have to be talking about this guy:

I don't see how you could get away with commercialising that though.

Thats the baby. Had one a few months and love them lookswise, and you can get a TT manual for good money nowadays, so want to go down that route again if I can, as a second car only though.
Think the commercialising thing is out all right, had thought about it but reckon it would be pretty tough in one of those.

Hi,

I have a a 1990 CRX 1.6 vtec insured under a classic policy. 154 euro for the year with FBD (classic departmet) as i am a member of the Irish Vintage Society.

As long as the car is 20 years old it qualifies, i still have to tax it as normal and nct it as normal, cars that are 30 years old are nct exempt and vintage tax is 44 euro currently i think.

British insurance industry must have different classification rules, theres no way you'd manage it with an Irish company, not for a good few years at least.
