draining battery

Postby kona » Tue Jan 27, 2009 10:14 pm

would anyone have an experience of this happening?
the FTO has not been started for about 4 months.
it has just drained a brand new battery, although it was running perfect before it was parked up.

Weak battery, weakened even more given the cold weather we have had over the last while. How old is the battery

Brand new apparently Rory ;-)

Kona is the car alarmed?

Did you drive the car after replacing the battery, or did you just plonk it in there and then left the car?

Put a charge on it, drive the car for a while and see does it work..

Should have read it a bit closer.

Battery woll discharge over time once connected/

Remember the battery was still being used by the clock, ecu and possibly the Alarm if fitted. Also check to make sure the bootlid was closed properly as the interior light may have been on.

what does the Volt meter read while you're driving?

also try starting the car and the disconnecting the negative wire.. what happens?

If the car stalls it's the alternator as far as I know.

(believe CJ passed this info onto me at some stage..)

that does sound like somehow the battery isn't being charged..

so check belts (as per the other guys)
and
check the alternator..

if the battery is chraged correctly the volt meter should read above 12v when you're driving..I've seen around 14v in a couple of FTOs at this stage..

as long as you're over 12v when the engine is running the battery is being charged..

just to update on the outcome of this.

FTO was brought to my ex mechanic and he took off the alternator
and sent it away to be re-wired.
car is running fine now.

total cost for the job was €335
does this sound a tad expensive to you?

150 - 200 euro is about right for an alternator recon.

From what I remember, getting the alternator out is an absolute pig of a job. Had to get the downpipes off and even then it was very tricky.

sounds like it was a bit pricey but that was probably due to the labour.
he did not like working on the V6,
for that reason i will always go to paul nolan, quicker at the job therefore a cheaper labour bill
