Anyone every used a claybar? Is there much to it? Is it worth the effort? I'm debating taking a full day out to clean the golf when I get back from holiers - any recommendations on what to use and where to purchase???

Never used a claybar, but I find the Poorboys range pretty good!

StevieG on ftooc can supply.

The concencus of opinion over the water is that Claybar rocks! I've seen some very very shiny cars recently and the claybar takes out a lot of those annoying surface blemishes and scratches.
Used with the whole range it seems to be the dogs, but it aint cheap

Yea, I've heard it's good alright. I might look into getting a kit - swissol or zymol seem to come highly recommended.

Let us know how you get on Shane, I want to give it a go myself at some stage. Halfords sell a claybar kit for 30 quid IIRC.

i've got the PoorBoys ClayBar that you can get from StevieG on our forum (detailing section) and its brilliant. definately worth the effort.

I claybarred my fto last sunday and the results once again where amazing. it makes the paint work so smooth! 8)

i've not used the claybars you can get but i hear mixed things about them. The poorboys one is probably the best.

clay bar AKA putty bar and cleaning clay. i was doing the rounds today about this stuff, 99% of places never heard of it.

halford have a kit that contains a tiny piece of claybar, its called "quickclay" from (maguires) 17.99 in liffeyvalley, said they dont stock any other claybar

then tried vinny byrnes, which was closing at 3pm on a friday, JESUS CHRIST :x, just got there as he was shuttin shop, this guy said it should be available in most motor factor.................. "cheers for sending me on a wild goose chase", tried about 20 motor factors over last few days and all but one hadnt a bogs notion wot i was on about :? .

finally on me way home today, i tried dublin car components in mulcahy industrial est, walkinstown. he had a product called from 3M called cleaning clay, opened a few tins of this, but no instructions at all  , he sells it to bodyshops, it felt different to maguires claybar, it was about 3 times the mass and was blue, cost 30 euro ex vat

so i left it til i find out more about this stuff

just remember when you're using it dont let it drag! if it starts to drag its bad news. you need the keep the surface/clay lubricated. I use Poorboys Spray & Wipe. not sure what other companies recommend.

Aweb. what did you pay for the claybar and spray + wipe? what quantities

could soapy water be used instead of spray and wipe, eg. a mild unperfumed soap ??

you get quite a large piece and the general practice is to split it into 3. You dont need to claybar every time you wash the car so it should last quite a long time. I've done mine twice in the last 4-5months. and i'm still using the first section i split up.

finally got the clay bar kit during the week, opted for the "quick clay" by Meguiars, 17.99 from halford.

ive just finish using it on the roof area and bonnet of me FTO. this stuff is the bizz.............. i washed and dried me car, ran me hands over roof and bonnet......... they were ruff and lots of rusts specks, use plenty of "spray & wipe", then drag claybar along if you feel resistance spray more "spray & wipe",
1/ be patient
2/ use plenty of spray & wipe
3/ keep kneeding the claybar to expose clean clay

spend a bit of time on the rust specks, if, like me your impatient, do your best and move on, then go back over the stubborn rust , a bit of persistance and plenty of lubricant will get 99% of contaminants out.

anyway to cut a long story short, after you happy wash off all residue, dry surface and polish and shine................................. finish was unbelieveable, as smooth as glass, all rust gone :D , great stuff.

now for the nickpicking  ,
nowhere near enough "spray & wipe", but the claybar will last.
the claybar is white, ive a white car  , id like to be assured that im not removing any paint.
