FTO Change of Ownership & Tax

Not sure if this is in the right forum....

Rang Shannon today because I bought the GPX about 6 weeks ago and still no tax book...

Apparently the lad I bought it off (Irish celebrity ha!) never taxed it.....EVER!!

I've to fill out some declaration to say the car is in my ownership now and then I'll be able to tax my car. I'm a bit worried about it now though....I paid 3k for this car, bit of a bargain but there was a little work needed on it......

Now I'm starting to wonder if theres something funny going on!!

Why not run it through one of the on line checks?
If nothing else it would put your mind at rest...

Surely you signed the VLC / VRC on purchase? Usually, the seller sends off the VLC to the Dept of the Env in Shannon, you might want to check with him on that point.

I wouldn't be too worried about it, as long as the cert has been sent back, thats proof of purchase.

Well I' don't see why you should need to fill in a form. Didn't you complete the cert of ownership at sale time. That should have been enough for them. The affairs of the previous owner should not impact on you.

He only askedme for my details didn't ask me to sign anything though.....That's what the cert is for that they're sending to me it's to prove I own the car now. I also asked him for a receipt when I bought it so that's proof if nothing else.....What online checks can I do??

Oh and to CJ, I don't think I'll name and shame just yet.....he told me his mate owned a garage and the car was listed with them or something so it might be all innocent yet......I'll wait for the NCT!!

Thats should have raised a red flag right there - in all circumstances, the seller and buyer need to complete the VLC / VRC on transfer of ownership, sounds like he got one over on you.

I know this doesn't help your plight but in future, walk away from a sale if the seller can't produce and ownership certificate.

Do you still have his number, give him a call. Also if you talk nicely to a local Garda thay will give you the last owners contact details, tell them you neeed to get in contact to return something.

I didn't know I had to sign anything. This is the first time I bought a car privately by myself. My own problem for not looking into it I suppose. He asked for my details to put on the change of ownership form and that was it. I wouldn't say he knew himself. Shannon seemed to have some form of documentation from him though but just told me I'd have to sign this declaration and I'll be able to tax my car then. I don't think I'm in any trouble or anything.

I trusted him because obviously if it's a well known person with a reputation to maintain he wouldn't be doing any dodgy dealings to get him into trouble.......or so I thought. Anyone have the number for The Daily Star or The Sun!!!

Strange especially someone in the public eye to do that. I sold mine recently, showed girl the VLC, matched up chassis numbers etc, she filled out her name and address (as new owner), signed it, I signed it and I sent it off to Shannon.
It does say on this form that 'the registered owner (name on cert) is not necessarily the legal owner of the car' So it might be reg'd to a garage but he does own it, may have done this to get cheaper insurance. But he still should have showed you some form of legal documentation at the time. Good luck with sorting it out.

Yeah that was exactly it it was insured under the Garage. Would that mean the Garage have that form then rather than him. He said he did that because he couldn't get insured. He said he had the car a number of years and insurance was sky high when he bought it. The car is pretty much perfect except some problems that are common with old FTO's and are quite fixable.

It's in perfect nick he told me he was just looking for a quick sale because he's moving house. I think it's just a genuine mistake. Shannon said the form should be with me tomorrow and I can change the ownership over and everything should be OK after that.

Phew! The garage could have the form, it just depends on his relationship with them, mate, family member etc.

First of all the VLC can take anything up to 8 weeks to arrive.
The form they want you to fill is to declare when you bought the car, so you dont have to pay back tax.
You should have signed the VLC and entered your address and off it goes.
Did the DEPTARTMENT say they had the old VLC, just ask them.

He may have been driving the car around on garage plates and therefore it would not have been taxed. His name may not be on the VLC.

I don't believe you need an NCT cert to tax the car unless this has changed in the recent past?

OK lads, got home and the form was here waiting for me. Some load of crap lads I'm sorry for the language but its just making me angry

The basic gist of it is I have to say what car it is, reg no. blah blah. That's fine but I have to get a main dealer to sign and stamp it, a person known to me but not related to stamp it and a bloody solicitor to sign and stamp it. What a joke. The dealer and solicitor will probably charge me for their time too. This is just a pain in the ...... Like I haven't enough to be at.

I'm gonna ring the lad I bought it off tomorrow and see what the story is. Anyone else ever have to do this before?

Had to get mine signed by a dealer when I brought her in from Japan, costs about E70 to get them to check it over. Supposedly to make sure its as whats down on the log book, no mods, that sort of thing. But if there is mods they say nothing, as long as tires, suspension, brakes, usual nct stuff is working they'll sign it. The solicitor thing is a bit strange though. I'd def check up with the lad you bought it from. If the car was ever registered in the country before, even under garage plates, theres no need to be getting a letter from a dealer I wouldnt be thinking.

No he just has to confirm that the chassis no. is the one I'm listing. I'm fooked if it has to be NCT quality as the suspension in my car is still needing a revamp......happening this week please God. God this could end up being an expensive tax year!!!

Would have to be I think, has to have a Mitsi stamp on it, as far as I know anyways. Think its to prevent fellas from getting Joe down the road doing it, seeing as he could be a very good mate and sign anything off. Not saying you wouldnt know anyone working in a main dealers but it lessens the chances anyway.

Ok I rang the lad I bought it off today. He said because he never taxed the car he had to fill out an RF100 form. I don't have to sign this form. He sends it to Shannon and they send me out a different form that I fill out and send back to them. He said he sent it the day after I bought it from him. He also said that he's gonna ring them Tuesday and see what the story is. Should be grand hopefully.....

Think the rf100 is the form you get after paying vrt, so at least thats paid cause I was thinking later if tax wasnt done there was a risk the vrt wasnt done either. But if he has the rf100 it should be fine.
