Dramatic loss of power?!?!?!?! Any ideas??

Postby neilkellow » Sun Jun 20, 2010 7:42 pm

hi all.
I have owned my FTO for some time and it has been a very trouble free experience. Until recently.

A couple of weeks ago I started the car as usual and when driving realised that all of the power had gone from the car. It crawls slowly to 4k revs and then nothing. Its like the mivec or injection are not kicking in. The car has also developed a problem(which i think must be related) with knowing it should change gear. Particularly in second. But gears work fine in tip mode. when the car reaches 4k revs it sticks there, no matter how hard i push my foot the the floor, nothing, apart from a louder gargly note from the exhaust.

can anyone shine any light on what could have caused this. I know that these engines are super complicated but if there is something simple i can try to replace or test then I would appreciate the advice.

many thanks

When did you last do a fuller service on the car, including changing gearbox oil and filter?

this is where I'd start for sure.

Sound to me like your torque converter may be banjo'd

HI.
many thanks for your replies. Firstly, the car is probably ready for some new oil etc so will get this done. As regards torque converter. What is this?? Is it something that can be replaced? a sensor? a mechanical device??

Sorry I am a novice with mechanics.

I will try the neutral gear thing tomorrow. But Im sure it revs freely in neutral.

thanks again.

I have tried the revs whilst in neutral and the engine revs freely. No problem. Does this show something???

Torque Converter

When was the transmission fluid and filter last changed, have you checked the level on the gearbox? As per steelroe, sounds like the torque converter is shot, you'll know by changing the oil, if its black then the TC will need to be replaced.

You don't list your location in your profile so we can't recommend a mechanic near you for further assistance....

It shows that the steelroe was right :)
Try camskills.co.uk for replacement or ask around here in this site if somebody have spare one

Camskill don't stock the TC but I'm sure they can order it in, call them for a price. You could find that a secondhand replacement box is a cheaper alternative, stripping down the box is fairly labour intensive. Price both options before committing.

The torque converter is independant to the box. It bolts onto the side of the engine where the flywheel normally is. box will have to be removed to get it off.
I would have a few lying around if it does turn out to be the converter. Test for converter here viewtopic.php?f=11&t=8163&p=58525#p58525
