Gasoline FTO?

Postby kevinod » Tue Feb 17, 2004 11:36 pm

Guys,

probably a stoopid question but here goes anyway... :? Came across an FTO on a jap exporters website, 260,000 yen which according to the convertor comes out as under €2k! Its an automatic/tiptronic though which isn't what I'm after, but for that price I could be tempted:

The bit where it says gasoline is a bit of a concern though, is that an error, as in it should say petrol? or would it need a conversion? :?:

I'd say gasoline means petrol. Grade 4 is pretty decent as well, add another grand on for VRT\Tax and you'll have yourself a GR for 3K, you can't go wrong really.
Incidenetly, I have never seen an FTO in that shade of blue, it could be midnight blue, but I can't be certain. My GS was moonlight blue which was nearly black in comparision, but I was of the opinion that Mitsi never produced a midnight blue FTO?

Well worth following up for that price IMO.

I'm checking it out alright... looking for any forum entries on importing for info on that too.

I thought I heard that when calculating the VRT for someone importing a car they take the Irish market value of the car into consideration RATHER THAN the price you actually paid for it? Made it a joke as they could basically make up whatever value they wanted as the 'current irish market value' and thus charge whatever they felt like, but thats the way they do it apparently.

Is this info right or has someone found otherwise?

Nice Car unusual color i would calculate it landed at a slightly higher pice

€2000 for the car
€600 for shipping
€260 for customs
€600 for VAT
€2000 for VRT
====
€5460

Still not a bad price for a grade 4 car imho

VRT is 30% of the Irish Value of the car (in a 1.9 or over) so they can charge what they like basically,

They use a depreciation calculator to calculate the value of the car so maybe you will be pleasntly surprised! I was going on them valuing the car at €6000

Theres a few more things you should look into like is there any stop overs on the journey back to Ireland as ive heard of bits being pulled off the cars on the way?

And other smaller fee's like steevadoring to take into consideration, But you will most likely get a well looked after car

Good luck

Not too sure where you're getting your VRT/VAT figures from SB, but in hindsight, it would be more than 3k. You pay VRT on the INVOICE value of the car rather than the book value. VAT/VRT on 2k car is:

VAT@ 21% => €420
VRT on €2420 @ 30% = €726

The total, less customs fee and shipping is €3146, so the total value would be nearer 4k than 3k. I'm just waiting for Adrian to get in on this discussion ;)

We imported a car last year and im pretty sure we paid VRT on the Irish value of the car (which caused a lot of problems as there wasnt many of them about)

I could be wrong though !! :oops:

That particular one is sold, but apparently they can get another, same colour & same price. I've asked whether they can get hold of a manual, so they're going to email me a response within an hour.

I might give customs a buzz/email too to ask what would be the vat/vrt/etc. on the car, to be sure.

You could have a point there SB, it could be the OMSP (Open Market Selling Price) that VRT is paid on rather than the invoice price, can't remember which one, I'm sure an Internet search would bring up the goods.

This looks like a good site for info on VRT:

http://www.basis.ie/botaccess/doc.jsp?c ... +%28VRT%29

for cars 1901cc and larger the rate of vrt is 30% of OMSP (subject to a min. tax of €315)

So it must be presented to a Vehicle Rgistration office before the end of the next working day following the arrival of the vehicle in the state, for imports from outside the EU its next working day after its release from customs control.

There was a post on the English FTO club forum about a guy selling one throught E-bay but it turned out that he was looking at car auctions in Japan and if you bid enough on his E-bay auction, he would but the car and then import it for you.

The reason I mention this is that he was looking for about €1,800 for the car. but a lot of the brits have imported so there is a fair bit of good advice going there (apart from Irish VRT law) Also, don't most importers mail you photos of the car - inside and out, before shipping , so you can check that it hasn't been stripped of goodies.
