Some people count the boot as a door..I've always found it somewhat odd.. I suppose if you kick in the backseats you do have access to the cabin..

i thought you only count the boot if its attched to the rear window ,like proper hatchbacks

I thought you had to be able to access the back seat from the boot, without putting seats down, you cant even put the seats down in the FTO so theres no way it can be seen as a 3 door. And thats a dealer too saying that it the ad I think is it?! Some knowledge he has!

It's counted as a door if it has glass.

So the FTO is still not a 3 door in that case so.

Didn't know it was if it had glass. Whats the point of calling it a door then? You cant enter the car by it. Its not an access point to the car, so its not a door. If you want to say its an access point to the boot then so is one without glass so why isn't that called a door? Bit of a confusing terminology if you ask me.

That's just the way it works! helps differentiate saloons from hatchbacks.
Can't see how it confuses you.

What constitutes a coupe is a bit of a grey area though.

Look it up....

"A vehicle door is a partition, typically hinged, but sometimes attached by other mechanisms such as tracks, in front of an opening which is used for entering and exiting a vehicle. A vehicle door can be opened to provide access to the opening, or closed to secure it. These doors are similar to a doors used in buildings."

If you can enter the car from the boot, sure it should be called a door, if you can't, then its not, simple as that.
I'm not confused about it Colm I'm pretty clear in what I think a door is, in fact I know what a door is, the fact something has glass isn't definition of a door, its the fact if it can be used as an entry point. True most boots that you can enter the car through have glass, but I presume that's just a coincidence and not where the definition comes from.

So confused? No. Stubborn? Yes. :)

That's all well and good, its a definition of a door.

I'm telling you how the entire industry counts doors, it's a fairly logical system to me.

Ya its a definition of a car or vehicle door. So whatever number a car has of the above makes it a 2, 3, 4, or 5 or whatever number door car.
I cant see how saying if something has glass then its a door is "fairly logical", if it has glass I'd consider it more a window. I'm saying a door should be an access point and that's how I see it and always thought it was seen.
Anyway all this started from the for sale of that FTO above saying its a 3 door and its not whatever way you want to look at it, by entry requirements or glass or whatever.

They open, they close, they give access to the van, so they're a door ya.
Do they always have glass though?

Vans are logical enough alright. so lets take a Corolla van. that has 3 doors, but a Corolla hatchback only has 2?

What happens when you fold the seats down on a Corolla hatchback, does it effectively gain a door?

Isn't a Corolla hatchback termed as a '3-Door' or a '5-Door'?

It is yeah, but I'm trying to understand your logic

Well that's exactly it, if you can access the back seat from the boot then its an extra door, so a 2 door car that you can access the back seat from the boot, by folding down seats or whatever, like the Corolla, is termed as a 3 door, and a 4 door you can access is a 5 door.
A car like the FTO, where you have to physically remove the back seats to get access to the back seat, i.e., you cant access the back seat from the boot by folding down the rear seats or otherwise, is simply a 2 door or a 4 door.
Thats my understanding of it anyway, which is what I was trying to say all along.

Eh no! - that'd be Van Gogh - you're thinking about that Dutch gay porn star - Van Backdoor.

For me a 3 door (coupe or hatchback) must include the rear windscreen lifting with the hatch. If it hinges below the hatch then its a 2 door. Hence in the case of the old Saab 900 where the 2 door and 3 door looked very similar apart from how the rear door was hinged.

Who cares what a door is "technically"? Everyone has there own way of saying it and we all know what it means. Besides the likelyhood of anyone using a boot as a door is slim to none anyway so what does it matter.
How is a sunroof categorised so? It opens and allows acces to the car (possibly for only the skinny or the really small and if there is already someone inside to open it). Is that a door?

I dont think a sunroof classifies as a door unless you're inside the car..surely it must be a criteria that you're able to open it.. ;)
