Rear projection TVs...

Postby CJ » Mon Oct 02, 2006 11:58 am

....anyone bought one recently? After some deliberation, I've decided not to jump on the LCD band wagon and invest my money in a HD ready rear projection DLP - the problem with this option is the shops are all pandering to the LCD revolution which means your choice of RP TVs off the shelf is limited. Can anyone recommend an online TV retailer who offer a bit of variety?

I'd sell about 25 lcd or plasma's for every one Rear Projection id manage to shift. Priced well @ €1499 for a 50' the reality is unless your going to dedicate the whole room to it, watch it in pitch dark and be dead level with the screen the picture just isnt up to much.

From what I've been reading, LCD based RP DLPs are comparable to a lot of the flat panal LCDs and plasmas out there (in terms of quality, black level and viewing angle) - the difficulty is that no one seems to be selling them in this country! Nailer, I'd be interested to hear what DLP models you're referring to. IIRC, you work locally - I must drop in and pick your brains ;)

Nah mines legit... I bought it down in DID a few weeks back as a weekend special... The same model is for sale in a few places now for 2K .... so i'm happy... now just need to figure out a way of mounting it to the firepalce considering my house has no chimney or solid wall to mount it onto!! Viewing angle is amazing along with quality

Indeed, Bernard seems to be developing a MfFTO / gfalls persona of late ;)

Nailer, if you get a chance, can you see if you can get prices on the following:

Samsung SP46L6HX
Samsung HL-S4266W
Sony KDF-E42A11E
Sony KDF-E42A10

There seems to be less and less plasmas in the shops these days, are they on the way out?

All the focus seems to be on LCDs...

In the past, it was arguable that plasmas had better viewing angles and contrast (due to their ability to show deeper blacks). Conversely, LCDs have better resolutions, use less power and have a longer lifespan. As a result, LCDs are more popular nowadays and seem to have taken over.

I have a corner to fill and I don't necessarily want to be wasting space with an LCD - at this stage, I have a preference for filling the gap with a suitably specced DLP.

Thanks Nailer. I'm used to shops over here not stocking what I need, more so with regard to electronics and car parts! Maybe I should just lie down and drive a Focus and watch my flat panal LCD like the rest of the country. Should I? Should I f**k!
