Break-in attempt

Postby Viper » Tue Aug 02, 2005 10:17 am

Some theiving little ****** tried to break into my car yesterday afternoon in Liffey Valley, smashed the passenger side lock off before he was chased off by a guy sleeping in his car two cars down from where it was parked - (How lucky can you get!!).
Anyway two questions come out of it...
1. Where can I get a replacement locking mechanism and the plastic door handle thingy that surrounds it?
2. Has anyone went down the route of de-locking the doors, but leaving the handles, and what are the implications?

Fecking bastards! Folks like that need subjecting to some evil punishment and torture! They are the scum of the earth!

Try RiceRocketUK for the replacement lock and handle although the passenger side will end up needing a different key to the drivers door/ignition.

Someone here in the UK smoothed the locks over but left the handles. I think it was Paullen. Only problem there is if your central locking packs up your fecked!

Sorry to hear that Viper, the little bollix!

As DP said, the passsenger side lock will need a different key if you change just the one lock, if you're not too bothered about baing able to unlcok the door from the outside then that might be a good option. Rory or RiceRocket are worth getting in touch with for parts.

Delocking (i.e just removing the locks and not the handles) will involve installing solenoids and hooking them up to the locking mechanism, if you were going to that extent, I'd remove the handles while you're at for that sleek clean look.

Ya, you'd have to think about installing a 'secret' door opening thingy somewhere on the car... but a bit of a security risk though, insurance mightn't like that too much.

You could also come a cropper if your fob battery goes flat.

Re the plastic handle, think I saw one on ebay at the moment?

The only reasonably safe way around it is to have a switch to open the doors hidden in the boot. Unless of course you have a smoothed boot lock!

The highest chance of the central locking not working is the car battery going flat so perhaps a small 12v backup battery in the boot only for the central locking would do the trick!

Thanks for all the fast responses lads, it's great to know there's such a knowledgeable bunch at the press of a button!
Saw the door handle on ebay alright... wrong colour though, although I'm sure it can be painted in burgandy. Also camskill have door lock sets to replace the whole set, but 200 sterling seems a bit steep - hense the query on removing the locks.
Removing the handles altogerher is definetly a big issue for the NCT, it's a safety issue with regards to getting into the car should you have an accident. I might go down the route though of just removing the passenger side lock - have the car two years now and never once have I put a key into it...

This isn't the first attempt on an FTO at Liffey Valley - I used to use a steering lock when I parked there but , lately, have been a bit lazy about it. I think I'll start back using it all the time.

Yep i know a fella who has the doors of his civic delocked and dehandled but it failed the NCT because of it, no problem thou he went to a scrappy got two doors fitted them passed the NCT then switched the doors again and put the other two doors in the attic for the next time. not something you could do easily with an fto unless rory has a few spare doors knocking about.

And technically speaking illegal so (AFAIK) would invalidate your insurance unless you have it listed on your policy, i.e. agreed with the insurance company.
