Torque steer

Postby optical illusion » Mon Jun 23, 2008 12:30 pm

Ahhh my first expererience, wasn't expecting it of course as it was my first long drive, went to overtake a bus, pulled out and floored it in third (fook! ) happened while I had one hand on the wheel (other one was changing to fourth) Scary! Think that the LSD sorted it out very quickly before it got out of hand though.

Brought a friend for a spin in it the other night to show him the mivec roar and it happened again but I was expecting it this time.
Then I heard him shouting "Arghh Laura! Why is the car going from side to side!!"

Quote of the week... bless...

I know exactly what you are talking about, however I'm not convinced it's torque steer. I think it's more down to a flimsy anti roll bar, and a steering and suspension set up that is not suitable for Irish roads. Only maginfied when you are accelerating.

I dunno Mustang, surely the handling in general would be pants if that was the case? Also why does it always pull the same way?

What direction is that?
Try accelerating hard in 2nd gear on a bumpy rd and you'll know what I'm talking about. The fto is fine on smooth tarmac, It's all at sea on bumpy roads -any I've ever driven that is.

Agreed - You won't get torque steer in an FTO in 3rd gear. More likely because its on the same suspension since it left the factory. I thought I had a good handling FTO till I drove CJs a few years back and I wasn't long getting my dampers/springs/ARB bushes and droplinks etc changed - the best mod on any FTO - period.

BTW Optical - How does the FTO compare to the Clio 172 - performance and handling wise?

Absolutely, it feels like its clearing the road even sometimes when going overtaking in second on a bumpy road, Dodgy feeling.

ya just need to be on the ball and build up speed to overtake rather than just gunning it

Gunning it is the job, pull up just alongside, give them a second to look over, and vroooom, gone!!!!
Plus sometimes you have no choice, you got to prepare the overtake coming into a corner you know theres astraight after, and once you round the corner, see theres no traffic, its do or dont moment, for me and the roads I travel that could be the difference between a 1 hour journey and a 2 hour journey!! Only so many places to overtake on a country road!

Yep deffo not torque steer....just happens on uneven roads where the geometry of a wheel suddenly changes and the acceleration kicks it to the side.

Dont talk to me about uneven Irish roads though....spent few hundred quid last week replacing ball joints on the levin
