I'll shortly be putting up my black 2006 2.5l Legacy AWD Estate (once I put it through the NCT) - genuine 55K miles - excellent spec (cream heated leather seats/panoramic roof etc) - currently getting mid 30's mpg. Will be looking for circa 8K so that'd buy you a lot of petrol and tax with the change and you'd have better performance to boot.

Those Accords are lovely, been looking at them too as a sensible car in time. Reckon they look the best of the 'executive' bunch and are still very affordable.

I'm kinda gone off the accord, they are becoming the new A4 Quattro kitted car, every second one I see is lowered, 19" AMG or Audi A5 alloys, plus, a friend has one and has nothing but hassle with the engine, the timing chain stretch and left him more or less having to pump €2K into it to get it right (I appreciate we've all heard horror stories about nearly every kind of car).

Dave, I know you're not an Octavia fan but you could do worse than take a CR TDI VRS out for a spin. I clock up a few hundred miles a week in one and I find it a relatively nice place to be, is cheap to run (~50MPG), relatively cheap to to tax (€330) and can move when you want it to (170bhp/ 258 ft lb). In retrospect, I should have bought one with a DSG box, otherwise I'm happy with it. Don't buy in Ireland (too expensive), go up north or over to the mainland UK for the best value. Incidently, VRT was the lowest of all of the marques I was looking at at the time.

I've been in the newer Octavia and they are a much nicer plan than the previous BOG standard model....

All dependant on selling the Qashqai though, I put it up on Donedeal and got a call literally twenty minutes later, nothing since though

Now the question is, do I go for an older car and pay the higher tax or pay more now and have lower tax and possibly a more saleable car...

Dave, I'd buy a Common Rail (CD) diesel, not a PD - its a much smoother drive. CDs are generally 2008+, it pays to do the research on this point. get a later car, more saleable as you say. I'd go for the black over the blue - better spec for a start.

Got a few calls on the Qashqai and reckon she'll go fairly soon so I need to make a move fairly quickly on a replacement.

Well I sold the qashqai yesterday and got what I wanted for it too!!!

Went to look at the black octavia above and I put a deposit down on it, extremely impressed by the vrs in comparison to my old cocktavia! Much nicer place to sit,loads more bells and whistles, and I have to say a nice amount of power for a diesel! It was really well looked after and a credit to the previous owner, he also knew all about octavia's in general this being his third one and it makes a nice change from dealing with the little young lads who reply to emails in "txt" speak, that's usually enough to put me off!!

My girlfriend got a new desiel car and I was surprised by the power as well (shame its a peguot )

Yeah, the resale on a Qashqai was one of the reasons I bought it, it basically sold within 6 days which is a quick turn around!

On a separate note, the prices that Carzone charge, you'd wonder why anyone advertises on them, I think they were looking for 40 straight up, where as done deal is 3 euro for two months! Best 3 euro I've ever spent!

The Octavia is really nice I have to say and well pleased that I listened the CJ and looked at one! Tight car, drives well and great pull with 260 ftlb of torque too! makes a nice change from the last few crap diesels I've been driving, I might actually keep this one for a while!

Glad to hear that it all worked out Dave and you're happy with the new purchase. Shape and badge aside, the VRS and the standard TDI are completely different machines. Its a CR I take it? I see it has maxidot as well, makes a nice change from the standard trip computer.

Yeah it's the CR, in fairness the car was immaculate and he was on his third Octavia, his last one was a PD version and he made the same comments as you, that the PD wasn't as smooth ect.

The maxidot is actually quite smart too and definitely makes a change to bog standard version...

CJ how come the tax is so expensive on a 2l diesel. I thought 2l diesels like the BMW 520 is something like €156 - or are the Octavia's emissions enough to put the tax up a couple of bands ?

The word expensive is subjective in the overall scheme of things but in this context, I take your point. The VRS CR knocks out 151g/km of CO2 which puts it into the €330 band. A new 520d comes in at 125g/km i.e. €225 p.a. which is likely down to more efficient engineering / tuning on the part of BMW. Practically speaking, if you can afford a new 5 series, the €105 a year saving probably isn't going to a major deal breaker!
