Suspension problem

Postby CByrne » Wed Sep 21, 2005 11:59 am

Hi All

Over bumps, the front left suspension is squeaking a bit....is this a sign of the bushes going?

Want to get the car lowered kit in any case, should I get bushes as well?

Thanks
Colm

I would - it'll tighten up the handling and transform the car :D

Drove CJ's car a few months ago and decided on the spot to improve my handling.

I have changed front and rear ARB bushes , F & R droplinks, Kyb Dampers and Apex springs, All remaining bushes changed including increased castor poly bushes on the front arms and also fitted a front strut brace. Change in handling and feel has to be seen to be believed.

Not an expensive job either - I spent about €500-€600 in parts and about another €200 in labour but its by far the best mod IMO you can make to any FTO.

Please forgive my ignorance.

I've just bought a set of 18" and I'm thinking that even with low profile tyres on them my fto will end up looking abit like one of those VW syncro thingies. (Tall and wobbely) - to counteract this I was considering lowering the car.

I've come across some lowering springs called "KING" I've never heard of the before - but the seller claims they're the business.. I'm not sure..

The I read here that Myfecking FTO has fitted Kyb Dampers & Apex Springs. Are these like a "one size fits all" kinda jobbie - or are there specific ones for the FTOs?

(Seen them for loads of other cars, but not FTOs).. :-(

Have a look at camskills website (www.camskill.co.uk) - or even ring them and talk to them - they're really good guys and will set you straight. Pretty reasonable on price too.

Springs and especially Dampers will be FTO specific - thats why you should try and find a specialist that sells FTO specific parts - going into your local motor accessory store is not a good first step to take when modding an FTO. Camskill, Funky, RiceRocket etc all know their FTO's and will be able to advise accordingly - good value too.

If your only worry is ride height on your 18's shod FTO - then just stick on a set of APEX springs onto your standard dampers - it will look and handle better at minimal cost.

Sounds like a plan :-) will get on to the Camskill lads as soon as I get some rubber on the 18s :-)

Nice choice of rim. 8)

The back breaking bit won't be the ride quality though - it'll be the price of 18'' tyres

I'd sell the standard 16's to help towards the cost.
