coolant dripping :(

Postby TeamEmperor » Thu Jun 26, 2008 7:53 pm

Well we got rid of a old FTO Gr as it seemed to break every 5mins & got a fresh import GPX had 3 months & now a problem :(

On the fto there is coolant dripping It looks like its coming out just above oil filter. Drips more when car is running & full of coolant or when rad cap is off. Seems to stops dripping when car is turned off.

My idears are
water pump Or
Corrded hose (I cant see the actual leak but see it dripping out)
Can knackered heater matrix cause this to?
The car is booked in to mitsi on monday which im not happy about as it will probaly cost stupid amounts of cash to fix with them :(

You don't state your location TE - somone could recommend a decent mechanic in their area, Mitsi won't be cheap.

If you get the car up on stands, you should be able to pinpoint the problem easily enough.

If it's the waterpump - the leaking will generally stop when the car is running and the water will all pi55 out when the car is turned off.

It's probably a coolant hose. I nicked one of mine the other day whil undoing a bolt - just replaced the hose myself and perfect again.

Source the leak yourself then take it from there - sounds like you may need to get under the car. In the meantime - keep it filled up before every drive - no major panic if you're doing small journeys.

Why would you book it in with Mitsuishi ? Where are you located.

It does sound like a corroded hose - it seems to be a fairly common fault now the FTO is getting to 10 years old +

A corroded hose can also be difficult to spot - now might be a good time to get some of those nice Samco hoses off Camskill.

MOst likely a hose, the reason it leaks more when car is running is dur to the pressure build up in the hoses.
You say it is above the oil filter so you can rule out any of the other things you listed above, check both hoses going to the rad.
Worst case it is leaking fron the front head gasket.

I really hope its just a hose. How bad is it if its leaking fron the front head gasket? What would need to be done :?:

well - that would be a headgasket replacement..

Top half of the front bank off - replace the gasket and top half goes back on..

as far as I know it's not huge job - as you don't have to dismantle the whole engine.. In any case I wouldn't class it as a small job..

- I could be wrong though.
