225/45 or 215/45 on 17'

Will shop for new tyres in the following week and I found similar prices between the 2 sizes.
I know most of you recommend the 215 set up but I wanna' hear some 225 opinions please.

for now the Ultracs caught my eye
no1. manual GR 96 l no2. tip GR 95 l no3. manual Gpx 95 l no.4 manual Gpx 95 l no.5 manual Gpx 96 l no.6 tip GR 95 - in 2011 took a break from the FTO scene

I have 215's but I wouldnt mind some 225's, I think the wider the tyre the better they look. Especially on the backs anyway.

agree , the looks is deffo a plus . but i'm more into the techincal aspect of it :mrgreen:

More rubber on the road has to be a good thing... assuming rubbing won't be too much of a problem.

standard struts on Apex lowering springs .
currently on 205 /15 all around and i deffo need bigger

225/45 should be ok if you have a good offset on your rim. If the offset is poor and you are getting significant rubbing on the arch liner then a 10mm spacer will help.

Do you know what rim offset you are running Seb?

True, although I'm sure if the tyres had actually been in contact with the road at the time it wouldn't have been as scary...

I think visually the 215/45 fits the arches perfectly with the Apex springs.

Also, the tread width relative to the wheel width has to be conidered, a wider tyre won't necessarily perform better and will be more prone to aquaplaning and noise.
That said, the difference between a 215 and 225 won't be massive, but it would depend on what width your 17 wheels are.

i had 225's on the Oz F1's but when i changed the tyres for the BF's i got 215 as I had some rubbing issues..... wish I had gone for 225's in the back tho!! I like the look of the wider tyre in the back!

I'd be inclined not to go too wide on the rear - overly wide rear tyres on a FWD car tend to increase oversteer and upset the balance. Stick to the same width front and rear to preserve handling characteristics.

225/45 for a nice look and a comfortable drive, 215's looks abit better but will be harder ride!

went for 215 in the end.
Didnt want to risk the tire rubbing on the wheel arches , as l don't know the offset of the wheels

hello

I will change my crappy car shoes and i finaly settled on http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php? ... b0s15p1686 , meaning a TOYO 215/45 R17

My question is related to the tyre noise;
I have now 2 pairs of NANKANG which although are not at end of their life, they kill me with how loud they sound on highway ... unbearable!

If my choice of ToYo is not so good , or if exists more silent tyres;
Which would be a non budget choice of a silent tyre ( with sport thread ) and with a reasonable lifespan( I only run on dry ... since here is always summer time)?

Toyo T1R's suit the FTO just fine. They don't tend to suit heavier RWD or 4WD performance cars as well as a relatively light FWD like the FTO.

Going on the camskill site in this size are also Falken FK452's which are 10GBP cheaper per tyre than the Toyo's and are just as good IMHO. Others to consider in your size are the Vredestein Ultracs or the Goodyear Eagle F1 asymmetric - slightly more expensive but better. However any of the above will be a good performing tyre for the money. Not really sure which ones would be quieter than the others though - its not something I really look for in a performance tyre. Your Nankangs were noisy because they are actually quite a hard compound - all the above suggestions would be softer and I presume quieter.

my primary concern is the noise they produce; since on the dry all of them perform excellent.. from what i read on the forum the most silent would be from VREDESTEIN as opposed to toyo and eagles
but i'd like a first hand opinion.. meaning someone who is satisfied with the level of noise generated by their tyres!

I had Proxes on mine and they were way quieter than the Yokohamas that came off it.

I had a set of T1Rs on the VR-4 and I was impressed with them - low noise and very good grip levels, wet and dry.

I previously commented on the quietness of Vredestein Ultracs, perhaps the lowest noise tyre I've stuck on an FTO.

If adequate stopping distance and grip is important to you then don't go for cheapo tyres - they're the only thing between the car and the road.

aha .. then if toyo-proxes are way more silent than yokohama/NANKANG range craps, and VREDESTEIN are quieter then toyo ; than VREDESTEIN would be the beeest choice for FTO /performance/confort balance :)))

not an exact science, but correct in this case!

Vredestein Sportracs very underrated tyre. Put them on a Focus and 323 and drivers were very impressed with noise and grip.
Dunno how they compare with the Toyos price wise.

thats why i stated, "no budget tyres"

and more i read about VREDESTEIN ULTRAC CENTO - 215/45R17 91Y XL , the more i think they will be my next shoes for my car

Vredestein Ultracs , that's what i used ! CAN'T FAULT THEM

I found toyos t1r's ( set that i used before ) very very good but they got worn quickly enough .
If you wanna' save some cash then I'd say Kumho Ecsta are good enough

what do you mean "quick enough" 2-3 years?

they seem budget price-wise

in conclusion:

I hope the Vredestein Ultracs don't wear off sooner than 2 years considering my mileage is like 300Km/week ~ 15 000 km/year
