Sticky caliper!

Postby Wildhound » Sun Dec 27, 2009 4:27 pm

I'm pretty sure my front driver's side caliper is after sticking. The other day when I was on the motorway I noticed a rumble coming into the steering wheel and pedals, which disappeared the next time I drove the car. Roll on today and the car seemed a bit sluggish. It had less pull on acceleration and seemed to slow down far too quickly when I took my foot off.

I got out in a car park to have a look and sure enough there was a little wisp of smoke coming from the brake pad and the ticking sound you get when everything's far too hot. Now that I'm pretty sure I've found the problem, does anyone know how I go about fixing it? I can't really drive with it like that. :(

Also while I'm at it my rev counter stopped working last week. All the other dials are fine. I took it out to have a look because I thought maybe the needle cup had come loose and was sticking against the background or something. It doesn't seem to be the motor because the needle will always return to 0 even if it has to defy gravity to do so, so I'm at a loss. Any ideas?

As usual, thanks a mill for any advice!!

This happened me in another car.
I got a friend to take apart the brake and make sure it was all clean
This solved it

You may need to refurb the calipers (do both sides for obvious reasons). Now would also be a good time to change the front pads/fluid etc.

Caliper service kit for your GPX - http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?plid=m3b0s8p4163

If you feel the wheel of the caliper that is sticking it will be hot.

This caliper was sticking a month before you bought it. I had my mechanic free it. the drivers side disc was heating up a lot, this was the only symptom though.

Yeah..I'd do a refurb...you might as well.. Kit doesn't cost a million and it's well worth sorting it before you get really annoyed with it.
