E60 5-Series

Hi All,

I've some questions regarding the E60 5 Series.
I'm interested in hear peoples opinions on the differences between the 530D and the 525 model.

I've been doing a fair bit of research on these an can come up with the following.

530D 2 Different Engines - 1 Producing 208bhp / 471 nm Torque Standard. The other 530D engine produces 220 bhp / 499 nm Torque Standard.
I can't figure out how to identify which is which on cars for sale... Did this come in as a new revision or is it simply that the SE produces more power?

525 Petrol - (Seems pretty Lame) - 182 bhp or 215 bhp with 245 or 250 respectively. Again same question re: SE model.

I'm looking at a 530D personally as i like the look / performance figures when it comes to tuning. On the higher powered model you can get over 620 nm torque with 277 bhp Just with the addition of a chip


Anyway just after your 2 cents over which car would be more of a pleasure to drive.... obviously i like performance ...
Would be pretty set on manual gearbox also....
Also interested on what you think would be a good price to pay for a late 2003 or early 2004?

Also any unobvious differences between MTech and SE that you could mention would be great... thanks!

You seem to be comparing the engine outputs on the E39 to the E60 5 series - two completely different models. Both 525 petrol and diesels received more powerful engines when the BMW brought out the new E60 model.


No differences in engine power between standard/SE/Mtech on the same model type.

My uncle has a '06 E60 5 series - 525D Auto - very highly specced - really comfortable car. NOT a sports car by any stretch of the imagination.

My mate has a 06 E60 535D manual - this is more like it - similar handling to the 525D - though with a lot more oomph. Still no sports car though - its just too big and heavy.

Wouldn't bother with the E39 - they are old hat (unless you're talking M5). A 2003/2004 diesel E60 model will set you back the bones of 38-40K.

If you're talking of spending that money - get yourself a Zed - leave the 5 series till you're old enough to have one. I hope I'll never be old enough to have one.

Personally I prefer the older shape 5 series (E39 or whatever it's called). No first hand experience but I believe the turbo's are prone to failure.

I'm not a Beemer man at all - but the 850 looks alright.. I belive it's really heavy and nearly impossible to get parts for though..

It's an old model with really narrow headlight - possibly pop-up ones not too sure..

Hmmmm... food for thought certainly... Would love a Z but its not really practical with a kid... if it had 4 seats i'd be buying today!!!

Mate, the boss mentioned you were thinking of a 5 - they're not a bad car if you're happy to cruise on the motorway. But they are not very interesting to drive - and they're not really that fast because they are so heavy. And no matter what people say about diesels if you're looking for performance having a redline at 4.5k rpm just doesn't cut it....

For the money you'd be talking I would be looking at an M3 - something around 01/02 - a lot of car for the money with plenty of space

Motorvation have a nice black M3 and a nice red S4 Avant - had a look at both about 10 days ago - both seem like nice drivers, plenty of space, luxury and performance

I wish there was.... I was fleetingly toying with the idea of changing from the TT to an M3 and while i was out in motorvation I saw the S4 - but then I costed everything and decided now is not the time as we really want to move house before I start tying money into a car
