Bleedin' stinkin' oil

I had a second hand differential in the boot of the Rex for a few days last week, it seemed like the best place to store it at the time! Anyway, used gear oil leaked from the diff onto the boot carpet and jaysus did it stink out the car. I washed the carpet in situ twice and it still stank so I pulled out the carpet and stuck it in the bath with a load of detergent. The result? Its still smelled like sh!te. Its been on the clothes line for a few days and the smell seems to be dissapearing - slowly.

He's another story to illustrate how rotten used gear oil stinks - I changed the diff oil in the Rex a few weeks ago and left it overnight in a basin at the side of the house (and yes it stunk like sh!te). When i was leaving for work the next morning, I was met by a bloke from an Bord Gas who was walking around the vicinity of the side entrance with a gas detection meter in his hand - the neighbours had called Bord Gas to complain about a gas leak in the area. You've guessed it, the bleedin' stinkin' oil at the side of my house was to blame.

Happy in the fact that I wouldn't be encountering any bleedin' stinkin' oil for some time to come, I went into Halfords yesterday and picked me up a container of Castrol GTX 10W/40 mineral for the Rex. Out of the shop, threw it in the boot of the GPX and home I go. As I approach home, the stench of bleedin' stinkin' oil enters my nostrils. Fearing the worst, I jump out an open the boot - you've guessed it - the poxy stinkin' GTX had leaked all over the b@stard boot of the FTO. I tried cleaning it as best I could but theres still a bang of grease monkey out the cabin.

The result? I have two sports cars in my driveway that both smell like a heap of sh!te unless I have both windows down fully and I'm traveling @ +120kph. Imagine trying to explain the story of bleedin' stinklin' oil to the boys at a speed checkpoint ' "Eh, sorry about that guard, eh, the bleedin' stinkin' smell of oil in the cabin was doing my head in and the only way to counteract it was drive like a flute...."

Black gold, Texas tea. The neighbours probably think you have struck oil (Ah so that's how he can afford two sports cars )
The sign of a real pertol head is one that uses oil fragrance as his air freshener -you are on a different level to the rest of us mere car enthusiasts
Used gearoil has a prettty fowl smell alright.

Re: the gear oil on the carpet -just a suggestion so not sure if it would work (or be a good idea for that matter). Perhaps try soaking the affected area in suitable detergent and then using a power hose on the carpet. (I take no responsibility for shreeded carpet!

Forgot to mention that I used a whole can of engine degreaser on the affected area and power washed it. Result? Its still bleedin' stinkin'!

How about a steam cleaner?

Man clean everything as best as you can.

Get a bunch of that airfreshener - febreezy type stuff - spray it on all affected areas.. that'll make it smell like pissy flowers instead of dead animals..

alternatively I'm sure you can get a bulk load of cheap aftershave from lidl....
