Postby Dave » Wed Aug 01, 2007 9:39 am

I know this has probably been done before, but there is one thing lately that has really begun to annoy me...

pull out in front of someone, loads of room, and the person behind speeds up and starts flashing you as if you had cut them up!!! i mean, what is the point!! happened to me yesterday evening, i pulled out, indicated and all, in front of a golf (Sorry SOC ;)) and he sped up and started flashing, and shaking his head!!! just annoys me!!

What bugs me is some ghoul passes you, pulls into the lane in front of you, and then proceeds to slow down to slower than you were going. I really can't understand that at all. Nice to have the power to just put down the shoe and pass them out again though.

well no point in arguing i thought, he probably would have lashed dangerous driving on top. and yeah that's the impression i was under, amber lights are stop unless it's unsafe to do so.

Was it a mk5? I'd put that down to jealousy mate - I've noticed a lot of Mk5 owners (esp GTI's) feel they have to prove themselves. Driving up your bumper on the motorway as well as around then bends. I've had a few funny looks of suprise from more than one GTI owner who felt I was going to slow for his race car....

This really annoys me - you make a split second decision based on circumstances & you've done no damage or caused any grief yet they make a deal out of pulling you over because in their "opinion" you should have stopped!

I had the same thing happen at xmas in donnybrook (turning left onto stillorgan dual carriage-way by donnybrook church, in case anyone knows it) - in traffic, already well across the traffic lights gain line so I kept going when lights went amber - young cop directing traffic pulls me immediately. He was an obnoxious git until he saw my drivers licence and realised I was 33!!

Also had an incident at a checkpoint at 12pm midweek - coming home from a long day in work, not in great form and some just out of nappies banner (female garda) starts giving me grief because I don't have my NCT cert displayed (even though I have it in the glove box). First time I ever answered a Garda back - she wasn't happy but didn't argue when I asked her if it was vital that she harrassed me about an NCT cert not being displayed for what was an obviously well cared for car when there were drug dealers, gangs and killers wandering about the city....

well you'd swear i nearly knocked someone down or something, the cop was a bit disgusted that i dared even do it, no damage done to anyone, not even a beep or anything, just a humpy cop!! i do still feel though it was partly to do with the car i'm driving..... if it was a banged up fiesta the cop probably wouldn't have bothered.

Dave thats horrible mate. It happens me quite often that I go through an amber light. My trip to work takes me through no less than 15 sets of traffic lights.... Due to the nature of traffic flow it is often neccessary to continue through a light justas it turns amber. I have often seen people taking the p1ss though. I went through an Amber on the M50 roundabout last week, it had literally just gone amber as I was about 5 metres from the stop line, and I was doing 30mph so realistically could not slam on or would have ended in the middle of the junction, so I kept going. I heard sirens and saw blue lights. FCUK. but it was actually a guy who was stuck to my a$$ tailgating. it was almost red or was red when he SPED through... they didn't like that, and either do I. Its a fine line, but the grdai need to be more tolerent if its not BLATANT taking the p1ss and speeding through an AMBER/RED light. If its red by the time you exit the junction etc, you were too late in my opinion. damn must keep an eye on this now or I'll be caught out.

well i won't lie, i was a smidge late, the light was not red when i went through but as i turned onto the bridge it would have gone red alright, a harsh warning would have sufficed i reckon because it's not as if i blasted through or anything, but i suppose i'll just have to put it down to experience and write it off as one of those things!! it's too fine a line to argue a point...

so another pet hate..... cops!!! ;) oh and i know, fto-ireland.com does not condone a statement like that!!

I used to sympathise but I know a few in the service and I have heard about some serious pi$$ taking and they would openly admit that for 99% once the uniform goes on tolerance generally goes out the window - in fact many would have banter with the real crimms because they know there's no fear there - from what I can see it's widely encouraged to use the "fear factor" many law abiding people would have....

But this is just what I've heard so many someone can correct me here...

Just to give my opinion. Been stopped a few times. Was followed by the gardai a couple of times for driving at excessive speed. First time I apologised and said I was just running late. He asked if that was any excuse, and I said absolutely not, apologised again. He asked where I was going and I said "a poker game" and he relaxed up and said "at least you honest about it" etc. Let me off with a verbal warnign to slow down.

another time guys followed me coming out of the drag traps (toll bridge) too fast. I never did over 70 but by god I tore up to 70mph. They pulled me in on the N3 then and checked the tax, where I lived etc, asked if I was trying to incite a race? I said no, not at all. and the guy was ok so, just cool your jets.

Last week got stopped at checkpoint and asked if I would NCT the car. I said absolutely, I only have it a few weeks so haven't got around to it just yet, butits on the list. he said ok so, work away.

So my brief experiences with the cops have been very positive. I take the opinion that if you have a good attitude and treat them with the respect they deserve (they do a tough job people) then i thnk 90% of them wil bem ore than fair with you. Too many people have "attitude" before they even roll the window down. thats only ever gonna get you in trouble. Im sure there are a few bad ones "power trippers" etc, but I have not seen this personally.

In Dublin especially, a lot of people act the maggot with amber and red lights. I've lost count of the number of times I've gone through an amber light and thought "phew, just made it!" only to see another 2-3 cars behind me go through the red light. Also at signal controlled roundabouts I often see the lights approaching the roundabout go green and someone on the roundabout whizzes through as I take off, obviously around 3 seconds after the light went red on their side. Look at the number of incidents with Luas, mostly caused by drivers either ignoring amber or red lights or yellow boxes.
I thought the Gardai ignored the red light thing, It's something they should focus on, but I'm disappointed they are targetting people like Dave who aren't posing a danger to anyone

Yeah to be honest I've only had a couple of cop related experiences in my two and a bit years of driving, but I've always been polite and as a result, so have they. I was driving without an NCT for about 10 months and none of them ever mentioned it when I was stopped at checkpoints or for random breath tests.

I've done 400 miles in the FTO in the last week and I haven't so much as had a craned neck from the Guards yet. Still, I've heard plenty of horror stories of power trips so I'll remain cautious!

well i've always been polite, on every ocassion i have been stopped, hence i didn't argue this morning when the cop posed the question did i think i was too late going through, i believe if i came back with a response such as well it would not have been safe for me to stop in time i reckon a dangerous driving charge would have been thrown at me... i don't ever have problems when it comes to checkpoints etc but if i'm ever pulled over they aren't usually too nice!! i've only ever encountered one half decent one and that was when i was stopped for speeding two and an odd bit years ago, tax was also out on the car for well over 7 months  ,it was my birthday and when the cop realised he eased up and said there was nothing he could do about the ticket but said he'd do nothing about the tax as long as i looked after it...

I used to have a strong dislike for the traffic boys in blue until one stopped me for speeding, then pushed started me and let me off.

Got a 60 yoyo fine and a jayser point on my license yesterday for taking a left turn at a junction at 18:15 when there was a restriction from 16:00-19:00.

Expense turn that one

I once made the mistake of overtaking a Garda jeep on a continuous white line, luckily it was before points came in so all I got was a fine. In my defense it was a straight road at 4 in the morning and he was behind a fiesta.
Still, the fine was nothing compared to what the wife said...

Generally, Ive had positive encounters with the boys in blue, like the lads said.. just be polite as possible and try and play off him/her to gain a mutual respect (even though yours can be fake  ) BUT the worst encounter I had was with three boyos in a riot van.

I turned right at the crossroads at Airside retail park to go up to the housing estate... gardai about 50 yards behind so still driving "properly"... went into the estate, parked the car in a space, mate got out, went to reverse, gardai had followed, no suprise, took no notice as id nothing to hide then all of a sudden he revs up and stops the van about a foot behind my car.... as I was reversing! I reacted quick enough not to hit him... then he goes on that he pulled me over coz his colleague (twat) in the van said I must of took the corner at at least 60 kmph.... I reckon about 10kmph! Ill admit it... I lost the fcuking head, called them all lying pr*cks.... nearly got arrested... was told I was very lucky theyre letting me go with the warning.... saps.

Rant over
