Gear Box Trouble

Postby JayVersion"R" » Tue Sep 19, 2006 9:22 am

Ok guy's my gear box has been playing up for awhile but the 1/4 mile runs took its toll on it. It is crunching in 2nd most of the time until it gets warmed up. Brought it to the mechanic and he says I need to replace the synchros in it. Anyone know the best place to get these or is Mitsubishi main dealer the only option. I have been looking at getting a second hand gear box but having the LSD in it has reduced my chances dramatically any help here would be appreciated

OMG Jay that sucks bottom!

I know there's a bloke up here in dublin that reconditions gearboxes - if you're unable to find a 2nd hand unit he could be an option.

Try the usual suspects... Ricerocket, Rory, HMD (will find number for you..) - also do a trawl of eBay..ring eveybody who's breaking FTOs...

Jay, you changed the gearbox oil recently, right? (if not, give it a go). Dunno if I would have run the car down the strip if there were synchromesh issues to begin with, but theres no point in dwelling on that point now! Its either rebuild or replace, if you can find a decent gearbox specialist close to home, I'd be inclined to choose this option (price dependant of course).

Jay - Here's that number... These guys usually have a few FTOs in for stripping... Sometimes they're cheap - sometimes they're v. expensive..seems to be a bit random really..

But they're nice guys - all the stuff I've gotten from them (Bumper, brackets, lights gear leather yoke..) has all been good.

As per CJ, your first stop is to change the gearbox oil. Relatively cheap the box holds 2.2 litres. The crunching could occur if the level is currently too low or an inappropriate grade of oil was used, or it just needs a change of oil. Is this crunching there all the time?
If it's only there on cold start the oil change may fix it.
If you do a search on the uk owners club you will find that this is not an uncommon problem :(

gear oil was changed, before 1/4 mile and still found her clunky, but ok, needless to say wasn't happy with it, but after the second run for the solo events (or so called solo events) I had her crunching in 2nd continually, more embarassing than anything else. I spoke with Rory and Ricerocket and must say they were very helpful but none of them have this in stock. as it is pretty special with LSD I have to look at getting the synchros as I reckon a new gear box could be somewhere in the region of 2 grand or so

Changing the Synchro is not that big of a deal. I would get a price for the mesh and have a go.

Mesh will probably cost around 400-500 I reckon.

You will pay premium rate if you go to a professional.
It is all described in the manual.

Don't have a manual, but Mike from camskill sent me on a complete break down of my particular gear box, I think about 5 charts in total, so that ends sorted. I will call the dealers on Thursday and see what kind of prices they give me and take it from there, I will also try a few of the guys in the UK. By the thanks Maud for that number I will give them a bell too.
