Damn it...
I was driving home and revved up to 7.5k rpm a couple of times under acceleration but that was it I was not doing prolonged heavy driving. I came to a stop in Lidl a few minutes later and heard knock knock knock knock like a knocking. A heavy dull knocking. oooppps. Whats that I'm thinking. I tap the accelerater and the knocking speed increases so I know its drive train related and am really sh1tting it now. I start driving again to pull in as I am in the middle of the car park. Then I hear a horrible grinding type noise and then some more horrible noises.
I'm freaked. Turn of engine.
I get under car and notice that one of the belts is about 10% shredded. It's not the alternator belt, its the other one thats visible. Is it water pump and/or oil pump? This belt drives 2 wheels. I'm nearly sure one is the oil pump, the other wheel must be water pump? I'm guessing one of the pumps seized (the knocking noise) then the belt was basically shredded by the non turning wheel? Does this sound right?
I let the engine cool and nursed the 2km home. I was happy it was nothing more serious. When I get home I look under car. Both pump wheels are spinning? The knocking seems to be gone at idle, but it was very bad on drive home. I'm not sure which pump is gone is the problem? I may have to buy an alternate belt aswell as I think the flailing water/oil pump belt damaged it a bit (it looks a bit hairy on the side)... Total disaster. I have no way to get to work now, plus it will take minimum 2 days to get the pump I need from UK. I also need to get the car transported to my garage/mechanic in balbriggan (from Tyrrelstown). Anyone any advice? My main question is any idea which pump is likley to have stopped and hence shredded 10% of the belt. both wheels that are driven off this belt seem to be moving fine now, and the belt is spinning fine too although its shredded and the shredded bit hits everything as it rotates... not good.
I don't feel so good, but I know it could have been worse than a pump or belt issue. I really thought my engine had packed in
