Oil change

Postby Big Dogg » Tue May 20, 2008 11:33 pm

I changed my ATF fluid and filter today :D - First time doing anything half way mechanical with the car lol. I also want to change the oil and filter. I have the filter already, but can't find a definate answer to which type of oil should be used - Fully Synthetic or Semi? I know oil brand and weight is usually down to preference, but should I use FS or SS? Also, can anyone point me in the direction of a picture or two of the location of the sump plug and oil filter on a MIVEC engine? Found it hard to find the ATF plug too :S

Thanks In Advance :D

First of all congrats BD on your first mech work!
Secondly, the engine oil is either 10W40 or 5W40, castrol is the one I use. Couldnt tell you if its SS or FS, think its SS. If you go into a motor factors and ask theres a good chance they'll tell you 5W30 or something like that, Dont get it, its too viscious, very easy to let the levels of it drop and some places will tell you manufacturers recommend 10W40 anyway.
The plug is simple to locate, its at the back of the sump (from memory), Cant miss it once you're under the car. Just dont let it drop into whatever you use to collect the old oil, not nice getting it back out! The filter is ok to find too if you know where it is, in front of the sump, if its like my car, look up and you might see a metal plate thats slightly angled down, this is the run off for the oil from the filter, (least I'm presuming cause thats what happens mine), above this and slightly back is the filter. Once you can get under the car you'll have no bother finding these.

Dragonheart spot on there.... 5w40 is fully synth, 10w40 is semi.

This might help for locating the sump plug:

its a pic of my Mongoose downpipes when I put them on. Just where the 2 pipes meet into the Y, look directly left, you see the sump plug sticking out the back of the sump.

Actually, I think you can just about make out the oil filter, top of pic, just to the right of the downpipe. Its black so hard to make out, but you can see that metal plate that acts as the run off for the oil.
