any help with suspension problem and wheel size guys?

Postby alloywheelsinternational » Sat Aug 05, 2006 7:26 pm

hi and welcome to all you it been a long time.
i had th car for sale last mont but after another trip to oxegen in ireland and restricted speed on the n50 i am now going to keep the car.
i have a few plans in mind but am afraid to do down the wrong route.
i just got full 70,000 mile service done including belts etc and all is driving well. i am now in the process of changing th look of the car.
i am sitting on blck wheels on white car and they do look ok but i am changing to a set of rota lightweight white wheels this week.
i am also going to fit full kit, DC side skirts, Creative sports front bumper and DC rear valance along with mini hiro or version R spoiler.
i have had a few quotes on prices but i am wanting to know if anyone has any of these parts for sale?
also getting back to the suspension,.
i am running 215/35/18 at present and it aint the most comfortable, i was thinking of lowering the car as it sits too high but should i drop the wheels to a 17" with springs or stick with 18" wheels?
will i run into any problems?
i know this is a mouthfull but if anyone can help me out i would appreciate ite.

17 or 18 inch wheels will really depend upon what your priorities are when it come to your car - if its looks - then go for 18's with coilovers.

If its for road performance (and to keep some comfort level) I reckon you are better off on lightweight 17's with high performance rubber - change the dampers to something like KYB's and your springs of choice (Tein / Apex etc) - upgrade to poly bushes all round and make sure your droplinks are in good nick. The fact that this option is a hell of a lot cheaper and better performing as a road car than going down the road of coilovers and 18's (+ rubber costs) makes it a no brainer for me.

Kit is a matter of taste - just remember a moulded kit will usually not be as good a fit as an original part. Prices vary widely and I could write a book on what parts suit what so take a look at gallerys and make your own mind up. Everyone seems to have a different opinion on what looks best so its really a matter of taste. I like the front facelift DC spoiler and DC side skirts and a hiro rear but I wouldn't really bother with a rear valance though I like what Jay has done with his new VS bumper with the diffuser.

Springs and shocks - I made this decision 18 months ago and went with a set of KYB's and Apex springs and they really improved the handling and ride - http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php? ... b0s585p416 - 229GBP in Camskill at the mo - add 99GBP for Apex springs - http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php? ... b0s584p412 - and you are looking at at least double the price for coilovers which start at 600GBP +. Any money saved should be used on poly bushes and shortened droplinks where needed - this will really tighten up your car - you really won't recognise your car after its done - the best mod I have made to my car by a very long way. Most of us drive an FTO between 18-12years old that is still running on orig dampers and in some cases on the orig droplinks and bushes and the car is handling nowhere near its true capabilities.
