Crash

Postby Wildhound » Sat Mar 15, 2008 8:29 pm

I was in the car park of the Square in Tallaght last night and a Hyundai Coupe pulled out when I had right of way and smacked into my front passenger side wheel.

It was at fairly low speed but enough to knock the bumper out of line, bend the quarter panel in a couple of places and leave a scratch along the door. Worse, the front passenger side wheel now looks like it's cambered so something's definitely wrong there!

Drove home all right but there was a hell of a lot of rubbing in the arch so I won't be driving it any more. The other driver accepted responsibility anyway. I felt sorry for her, she was in bits. Feck all damage to her car though. The reg plate fell off and the bumper was scratched.

I'm gutted but at least it wasn't my fault!

It's thinking like that that makes the premiums so high in the first place.
Not to mention illegal.

No only is that a terrible idea it is also Illegal.
Please don't suggest illegal activity again.

Wildhound - terrible luck you're having lately. Atleast nobody got hurt and you have insurance cover.

Bad luck... at least it looks like you'll be covered with insurance. Don't count your chickens until you have all the paperwork sorted out though...

Totally agree with Jay, my brother-inlaw was in a really serious crash two week's ago & he had to be cut out of the car & it wasn't his fault either!
& he was seriously injured but at least he is alive!!!
So where would false insurance claim's leave people like him who are really hurt through no fault of their own!

False claims just drive up peoples premiums, people with genuine claims still get the same compensation.

Update on this:

I’ve been in touch with Axa (her insurance company) and they’ve agreed to take the car into their garage on Belgard Rd to do the repairs and give me a rental in the meantime.

I’d be worried about this only for my dad was hit by an Axa insured person a few weeks back and they did a fantastic job on the car. Needless to say I wont be settling for a poor job.

What ever happens do not leave the garage without checking the work over fully, I seen an insurance job some months back and it was a disgrace, done by a main dealer. The owner sent it back twice and in the end made the insurance company allow him to take it to another workshop.

Just called the garage there for an update (because I heard nothing since they took the car in last week).

They've just sent a parts list off to Axa and are waiting for a response. Apparently repairs will cost 4500 euro :o

I think you have an option to take the pre VAT price? as long as the car is worth more than the repair.

Depends on what you could get for your car in it's current condition. I remember how much they guy you bought it from was asking, and there are a lot more FTO's on the market now than there was then. If you like the car you have, keep it.
It just opens up opportunities to upgrade for free.

I will nearly bet AXA will not pay for the repair as it is going to cost the price of the car. They will write it off as un-economical to repair. I would get a good accessor and get a high as possible pre accident value for the car. (The old "manual" is rare line is usually a goood one). Then as a settlement buy the damaged fto from them at the scrappage value and take the diff in from the insurance company. i.e

Pre-accident - scrappage = cash for wildhound for new fto and you have a complete car for parts.

or take the car for scrappage as above and do it up for a fraction of the cost, pocketing some money for the hassle.

Cheers Steelroe, that sounds like sound advice. I'll wait till they ring me and see what they have to say. They said they'd call tomorrow but that probably means Monday : :x

It just occurred to me that if I do end up having to buy another one, with the current shocking Sterling exchange rate it might be worth a trip to England. Fantastic selection on Pistonheads.
