Engine Issues

Postby kamaya » Tue Jun 13, 2006 6:49 pm

Hi all,

I have a Manual GPX.

Really need help. For past 2 days the normal tappety sound has become a LOT louder & I have lost power.

I have done a full oil change, and put some top end treatment in thinking it was a tappet issue - but that didn't resolve.

On further investigation it seems that the noise is coming from the rear bank of cylinders. So from here I haven't a clue where to go next. The noise pretty much subsides when idling.

Any suggestions? Anyone faced something similar?

If it's something like a cylinder or cam prob, anyone have an idea how much this would set me back?

Any advice appreciated.

Sounds to me like you should get some pro advice. Its possible that at least one of the tappets has become very worn to the extent that its making a racket. Where are you based?

I'm actually based in Swansea, Wales - I've been scouring the internet looking for advice!

Oil level was fine before & after the oil change - first thing I checked.

Nope, it's there soon as I go over 1k.

Been to see a mechanic today, he thinks it either a broken cam or hydraulic lifter - which is gonna set me back about £500 - £800 (750 - 1100 euros)

fto owners beware!

Just don't let him buy the parts direct off Mitsi without trying the likes of Camskill and Ricerocket first!

kamaya, get onto the FTOOC forum (if you havn't done so already) and see if a few of the guys can recommend a decent mechanic (with FTO experience) in or near Swansea. If its just a single tappet then it won't be that costly. If one of the cam lobes is shot (unlikely IMO) then you want to getting a second hand one to keep the costs down, jobs like this tend to be labour intensive.

Let us know the outcome.
