Could you elaborate on the insurance with Hibernian? My GF had severe difficulties with them recently on the two cars you were considering also -the levin and the FTO.
Two months ago they would cover the levin for ~€500
Recently quoted €1900 for FTO thats 3rd party cover only.
Refused to quote her for Levin.
Then I rang them, they quoted me €840 on the levin. (note I am younger, male, and have a smaller NCB than her)
She rang them back the same day and they quoted her €6000 for the levin. Some rubbish about changing their under writing policy. Effectively they increased the premium by a factor of 12 :smt013 And would offer 3rd part only. No option for 3rd PF&T, or Comprehensive.
Meanwhile other insurers are offering cover for €400 -€500.
Then they said she should not have been given the quote on the FTO in the first place.
[Shane perhaps you could split this one again and move to insurance forum]

Just to add to this I am insured with Hibernian - they orig asked me for €1750 (3rd party) but I got them down to €1100 for 3rd party only (on a Manual GPX). Renewed this week.

Insurance

Postby Muad_dib77 » Fri Sep 02, 2005 8:26 pm

Well I've been doing it through their insurance form ..Online and all..

I've had my license for 5 years (1st feb 2000)
It's full EU
NCB 2 years, prev. insurer Hibernian.
I set the engine size to 1995, or 1999 seem to make no difference
I work in IT.
Main Area of use in Meath outside 25miles of dublin.
I'm 27 years of age.
Car is regged 95
0 Penalty points (cos I've never been caught by a copper who wanted to go through the hassle)..and I've been reaaaally lucky with the speed cams this far..all flash no photo ;-)
Miles 5-10k yearly
Value of car is set to 8000

Those settings give me a quote of 2k and change.

If I then add my girlfriend as a named driver (add as partner)..
she's 26 ..works in IT (kinda)
0 Penalty points, cause she drives a 1.4 ;-)

I then get a quote of 1.5k and change.. :shock:

It's amazing really.. Completely bonkers, but hey..I'm not one to argue :P

Just for the hell of it I tried getting a quote in her name..

She has 5 years NCB

Came out at 862 or something ridiculous...if I added meself it went up to 1k and change.. THe of course I'd have to protect her NCB ..but with that feature it came to 1200 and something silly. However as the years as named driver isn't always accepted as being valid NCB - I'd prefer to pay the extra 300 squid.

I also tried adding my 57 year old mother-in-law!
8) ..thought maybe I'd get free insurance then...but for some some rason it the quote went back up to 2k.

Maybe they know something about her that I dont.. :-) :shock:

I want to DIE!!

Postby Muad_dib77 » Sat Sep 10, 2005 9:38 pm

Oh nonononono this can't be happening!

I've bought the car..well happy with that..It wasn't so darn dark now I'd be taking pictures of it.

I went to get my insurance sorted..Online jobbie at Hibernian as described in my previous post.

Flipping b-stards claim a GPX is a sports car..WTFlip is that about???! :shock: :smt013

They'll qoute me - but they wont insure.. I feel like tearing out my eyeballs.. I should be on my way to Galway now.. Now I can't cause I'm a paranoid person.
If I was to go out driving now, sothing terrible would happen and I would be covered..and it would suck hard!.

Oh Dear Oh Dear Oh Dear. :smt022

Anybody who knows anybody who'll insure me on a sunday?

*sigh* :?

Quick Update

Postby Muad_dib77 » Mon Sep 12, 2005 9:23 am

Today is monday.

Tried Hibernian again - still no luck.
So I thought I'd give them a call - turns out that although the FTO is included in their form - and they do a quote for it - they are not willing to insure FTOs.

Not Impressed with them.

Got in touch with my broker, Mentone insurances - waiting for the nice lady to get back to me.

It's pure torture this - I have a nice 95 Manual sitting in my drive, and I can't drive it.

Feeling like a kid who's been given a bag of his favorite sweets - and then told not to eat them.

Well I'm insured with Hibernian for €1100 for 3rd party - they quoted me last year no problem and requoted me 2 weeks ago. Have named GF on policy as well - curiously this didn't do much for the price of the insurance yet when she put me on her policy it fell by €500 (again with Hibernian) - both the same age with full NCB.

BTW - The 98 impreza turbo (still have it) we have insured is costing us €680 fully comp per year (with Hibernian) yet they won't even quote fully comp on the FTO.

Try St. Pauls through a broker Muad.

Cool Will do.

Got quoted 1100&something on 123.com - but that's with a 4k excess, not really keen on that.

Rang Daves crowd - spoke to a lovely lady there called Danielle, waiting for her to get back to me.

and

Still waiting for Mentone to get back to me.

*** UPDATE ****
It has now been a few hours.

Checked AXA -> No Joy
Checked Onedirect -> No Joy
Checked Britton -> No Joy
FBD -> No Joy (Vehicle is too high performance!!)

Absolutely flabbergasted (sp.?)

Well I'm not surprised in the slightest. Hibernian have been acting like a right shower of Fookers recently.

This seems incredible! Britton will normally quote any high performance car, online too which is quite rare!

FBD -> No Joy (Vehicle is too high performance!!)

I'd ring them again if I were you. I got a quote off them in the last month or so. First time I rang the girl told me that the don't really do jap imports (whatever that means). I rang back the same day a few hours later and got a quote on the FTO -no hassle. I described it on one of my threads!

Britton should also quote - did you phone them ? I am with them for the past 2 years but I'm over 30 - maybe that is a problem with them ?

I'll try and phone both Britton and FBD again 2moro.

As I still have a policy with Hibernian my broker thought they might be able to simply get them to change over my policy. But if the quote is something mad I'll tell them to stick it.

I didn't anticipate that this would be so much hassle.

I still don't understand the concept of collecting all the details - providing a quote - and then not wanting to insure after all.
Strangely backwards if you ask me.

Ya, legally they have to give you a quote, but there's nothing to say that the quote has to be realistic/sane.

1st call back from Mentone.

Two Quotes:

Hibernian: 5000euros
ARB: 3200euros

Thanks but no thanks - I'd sooner be jumping from somthing tall!

I can't belive the Hibernian quote - the neck of these b-stards.. :smt011 :smt013

Well I can. They messed my GF around so much lately with extortionate quotes and poor service that she said :smt098 to Hibernian and after 7 years with them has left them (mid policy) to go to a more professional (and competitive company).
I have heard of numerous people being messed around by them lately. They have apparently "changed their underwriting policy" translation means, they have lost their customer focus, professionalism and competitiveness, grasp on reality, etc!

Oh yeah..Fully comp is what I want. No more 3rd party for me.

And they with the Missus as named driver.

5 years NCB
Has had license for 7 years - Full Irish.

My next car will be on spanish reg.

1stly I have an excuse to drive to spain on a whim
2ndly Roadtax will be next to nothing
3rdly I'll need to set up an address in Spain, which will be an excuse to get a house there
4th I'll get to show all Irish insurance companies wth V-sign as I drive by in my "El Presidente 1974"

(The above is just a rant - I'm not really going to get a spanis car..although..)

Why would you pay insurance of 3K plus for fully comp on a car thats worth 6K?

IMO you would be better insuring it 3rd party for circa €1200 and taking the risk that you won't be slapping the FTO off the nearest pole anytime soon. Money better spent on mods IMHO. It may be worth fully comp on a car of 15K plus but at that money it makes absolutely no sense to me.

I see where you're coming from..

I wont be spending 3 grand on fully comp that's for sure..That just does not compute at all.

I realise of course that the FTO is a powerplant..which is why I bought it in the first place. I just can't help thinking that if I'm having all this hassle, what about the poor sods who get all excited and get them selves a Golf 32 or a 911?

I am disgusted.

Will start callign around when I've had some grub - otherwise I'm too cranky!

I am pretty sure you would get cheaper insurance on the R32 Golf than an FTO. Same goes for EVO's and Impreza Turbos.
The Irish Insurance companies have a very unrealistic assessment of FTO's. Only good side to this is that it keeps the FTO out of reach of the bad-boy-bonnet Corsa to pimp-my-ride 3 box saloon brigade.

So you can see the craziness of Irish insurance I got the following fully comp quotes from AXA:

Mkiv GTI - €1000
Audi S3 - €1300
Golf R32 - €1320
225bhp TT - €1350
Porsche boxster - €1450
993 Porsche 911 Carrera 4s - €2120
FTO vR - €2200

I have full 6 years NCB and all quotes are fully comp and include all my current perks - windscreen, protected NCB, theft does not effect NCB.

How can they justify giving the FTO the higest quote here when it is actually slower than all but the GTI?

OMG that just makes no sense at all!

Are they saying that FTO drivers are more likely to cause an accident?

What a load of stinky-mud!

Latest update:

Britton -> Waiting for a callback. But last time I spoke to them I had no joy.
Hibernian -> 5k (Through Mentone)
ARB -> 3k (Through Mentone)
AA -> No Joy
Eagle star -> No Joy
Quinn -> No Joy
St.Paul -> Wouldn't even talk to me as I was given their direct number by the AA bloke.
Daves crowd -> 2926e
Mike Murphy -> No Joy

I'm almost ready to go with the f'ers at 123.com just to get driving.
:(

I'm running out of numbers here.

**************
UPDATE
**************

I actually rang the 123.com people. Not nice. Very short with me.
I asked for a quote and the lady said "We don't do quotes. You'll need to go to our website." - and she said it in a snotty tone. Kinda like I was the scum of the earth type thing.
So yeah I persisted, refraided from using foul language; "Is it possible to reduce the excess?" I asked.
"No, You will get what is stated on the website", She replied harshly(Not fair, but harsh!).
To which I responded "Right, I'll call you back if I can't find anybody else."
:? :cry:

I wish I'd bough a Yugo...I'm sure with the right body kit...and a fair squint..I could make it look like an FTO.. :roll:

Maud,
For the sake of exhausting all options. Ring Hibernian directly.
Did you get the quote directly from them or through broker? The person who answers the phone has little authority. If you get no joy ask to speak to a supervisor. If you got a quote for ~€2k then I expect they would have to honour it. It doesn't sound like that broker is doing you any favours!

It's possible that you're right. I was with Hibernian on my previous car - and all I got through my broker was a 50euro discount. Not much of a saving, wouldn't even cover a tank of petrol today.
I certianly have nothing to lose.

The really annoying thing is the inconsistency between what they say and their webform. That bugs me!

I'll ping them again tomorrow.

Must admit though that I'm getting slightly fed up talking to all these Insurance people - they're not very nice people. (No offense to any of you in the bizz!)...*sigh*

Friend of mine is saying I should get in touch with the Ombudsman..Might do that. Will sleep on it.
