Fuel economy maintenance

Postby aum108 » Fri Mar 28, 2008 10:26 am

Hi folks,

Following on from the earlier thread where I mentioned I was getting only around 14mpg in city driving.

Yesterday my wife and I drove 120km in the country to visit her daughter. I was very gentle on the accelerator. Filled up before and after the trip, and calculated around 24-25mpg.

This still seems very low, especially compared to the 28-30mpg which some people mention on this forum.

I'm asking as a mechanical n00b - are there any areas of maintenance that can improve fuel economy? I've replaced oil, oil filter and air filter, but that's the current extent of my knowledge.

The car has only done 72,000km, has a 2litre engine and a tip box. Tyres are mags, inflated to 29psi.

Cheers if you can help

David,

The fact you have a tip box would be a contributory factor in why you would have worse fuel economy than a manual. What RON fuel do you use over there? GR or GPX?

you say you have changed oil, oil filter, and air filter. I would suggest changing the plugs too and using some injector cleaning and then changing the fuel filter.
I know you have only done 72,000km but if the plugs have never been changed yet, I think this would make a difference.

And Hobbiton, we dont have that. Now theres an idea for a tourist attraction - Baile na Leprechain.
