New motor tax based on emissions

From July 2008 there will be two separate tax systems for cars. Cars under the original motor tax system will continue to be taxed based on engine size (cc). New cars registered from July 2008 will be taxed based on their CO2 emissions level. New cars purchased in the first six months of 2008 will be switched to the CO2 system on first renewal of motor tax after July 1st 2008, if the tax rate is lower.

Does that mean that if a car regged april 08 is taxed on old system at 300e but 600e in new system it stays on 300e?

That's how I'm reading it anyways.

AFAIK, yes.
I think its to help sales a bit, and its kind of a win-win situation for anyone who bought in the first 6 months of this year.

The statement says any new cars registered from July, but I think its new or second hand car registered after that date? ie, no more freshly imported FTO's?? :smt022 (Well, unless you want to pay €2000 a year for our great roads!)

My understanding was that cars first registered before 2008 would still be taxed at the old rates for road tax, even if they're imported after the new tax comes into effect, while VRT will be transferred to the CO2 tax for all cars.

I can't see any sense or justice in a system where there could be two FTOs on the road, one paying 600e per year while the other pays 2000e.

I may be wrong though, it hasn't been made very clear!

AFAIK in the case of importing an FTO after July:

1 - The VRT will be paid based on CO2. As FTO's don't have CO2 certs (no JDM cars have) then it defaults to the highest rate, 36%.

2 - The motor tax will still be based on CC as it is now.

I sent the tax office an email through their webform same tim as I posted this.
They rang me monday morning to clarify..

If a car is registered before July - and it's cheapest for the owner to use the old system - the car stays in the old system.
If it's cheaper to use the new system the car will be moved to the new system.

Does anyone know if this holds true for Classic cars (>30 years)? I'm guessing (hoping) the 50 VRT for those won't go away?
