revs going up and down

hi all,
driving a 95 gr auto
there is some thing up with the revs when i am braked
the revs will rise to 3000 then drop the car will start jumping along
this stops when i press the accelerater
or the revs will drop suddenly and the car will cut and wont start again
unless you rev it up and put it into drive quickly,(very danderous when stuck in traffic)

putting the car up for sale so need to get fixed asap
had enough of the problems, need something more reliable
doing high mileage

Does it happen all the time or only when the car is cold or warm?

I'm not sure it would solv it but it could be worth cleaning your stepper motor..In anycase it certainly wont harm

Also when was the last time the car had a service? (Airfilter & Plugs could be relevant here).

ther doesnt seem to be any connection to temp
generally will do it anytime
full service last week changed fuel filter and plugs

As per Mauds advice sounds like a stepper motor, or possibly as mass air flow meter problem.

If this has only started happening since the service I would start by resetting the ECU (disconnect battery).

I have this problem too cant figure out what its from

i had mine in the garage all last week
the guys tried everything
they upped the revs in idle so it doesnt cut out so much
taking it to mitsubishi garage in dungannon on monday to get
her checked up

i said to her this morning that if she didn book herself up she 'd be sold
for parts, strangely no cutting out today.

Check the stepper as has been suggested, failing that its qyuite possible that the throttle position sensor (TPS) is at fault, has it been removed from the TB at some point? More info:

shes back on the kangeroo juice today
dispite my many threats,
would it have anything to do with the petrol????

Well the stepper may be faulty. In which case cleaning it is not going to solve the problem. It could be:
The stepper motor.
Bad petrol -could try replacing the fuel filter/ use some injector cleaner
Faulty MAF.
Bad earth somewhere.
etc

check out the wiring connected with the stepper motor as this sorted out the same problem for me

download the manuls and see the troubleshooting section for the fuel injection. I will list possible reasons for surging rpm. Go through it step by step.

My bet is the stepper. Doubt if bad petrol will cause this!
Air flow (MAF) meter as posted above could also be problem.

Check the ECU for fault codes. and work from there

I wouldn't rule out the throttle position sensor either, it doesn't fail that often often on the FTO but is a likely source nonethess. Start with extrating diagnostic codes and work from there.

this happen me days ago i use some injector cleaner and everythin is ok for NOW hahaha

went to the mothership this morning for diagnostics
but they counldn talk to the car as its a jap import (pure sickened)
but the guys did suggest it was the throttle, they changed a few pipes and
cleaned a few thingy me jigs and the car works fine.(sorry not very technical) it all happened in and around the stepper motor.
they coun be certain were the problem was but they seemed to have fixed
it
anyway on we go, until the next time,

I presume you could just earth the connector pin off part of the car frame visible in the pictures?

i had a look at it.
to be honest its a wee bit beyond me.
ill print it out and give it to my mechanic mate.

getting a new yoke next week, so will be able to
park the fto up and get it fixed. then shes for the autotrader

Mick, it really is a very simple process, you should give it a try. Basically:

1. Remove 3 screws and take out plastic section under steering wheel
2. Using a piece of wire connect to a pin on the port and then to a section of metal close by (earth)
3. Look at the engine light on the dash and note the the frequcnecy of the flashes
4. Cross ref against known diagnostic codes
